MY ACHIN' HEAD: It sounds like you may have an inflamed lymph node, called a "Reactive" lymph node. We have many lymph nodes in our scalp, including in the vicinity of our ears. They can be quite painful but they are a sign of a healthy immune system. They tend to go away after several days, and can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications and warm compresses. If they persist, follow up with your doctor. ...Read more

These occipital nerves can be aggravated without any trauma. Tilting head back can cause dizziness if these nerves are aggravated. 7 days or oral steroid or 5 days of Toradol may knock out this irritation to these nerves. ...Read more

I'd have to examine: Kids do have some lumpy areas on the skull. Some are a prominence of the normal occipital ridge, some are lymph glands that are prominent because they are not buried in muscle of other tissue like they are in the rest of the body. I'd have to examine it to be sure but most "lumps" are benign if they are not tender. ...Read more

Yes: Chances are, the bump is some sort of local infection such as a pimple, carbuncle, or ingrown hair. Is it red and tender? If it didn't hurt, I'd think it was just one of the spinous processes at the back of the spine jutting out, but that should not hurt. See your doctor. ...Read more

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, and physical examination, however, it does not appear to be a serious issue and you may wait to consult your doctor next time you see her/him. If the "lump" doubles in size, bleeds or ulcerates, see a doctor immediately. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex. ...Read more
