A mammogram is the "gold standard" screening test for breast cancer. It's well established that yearly 'grams will DX cancers well before they are palpable, leading to earlier diagnoses and saved lives. Unlikely need tests: At 44 yes have to be concerned , if you have any abnormality , will need close observation . Most likely you have thick dense breast tissue , if you have lumps and masses one will feel them which you don't have , you have densities by xray only. Speak to your md will advise you if need MRI of breasts or even core needle biopsy of the area , don't forget to go for follow up visits. Good luck. ...Read more

Mammography is more sensitive to picking up cancers but does involve small doses of radiation.Us has no side effects, but is not nearly as sensitive in picking up small cancers. Sounds too long: If you have new breast masses, you should have the mammogram +/- breast ultrasounds asap. Ask your physician to call the mammogram center to see if s/he can get you in sooner. Also, ask the mammography unit to put you on their wait lists in case any one cancels. I would also recommend seeing a breast surgeon for evaluation as well. ...Read more

Consider ultrasound: I understand that doctor is worried about radiating breasts when you are breastfeeding, but another option would be to get an ultrasound which is safe for breastfeeding and can be more accurate than mammogram in young women your age. Ask your doctor for an ultrasound so you can rest assured that these lumps aren't more concerning. ...Read more
