In: In general, for uncomplicated surgeries, it is recommended to wait 6-8 weeks prior to lifting anything heavier that a gallon of milk. This is because the tensile strength of a wound is relatively stable at this point. After this, a slow return to normal pre-surgery activity should ensue. ...Read more

Removal Of Appendix (Definition)

An appendectomy is surgery to remove the appendix. The appendix is a small, finger-shaped organ extending from the first part of the large intestine. It is removed when it becomes inflamed or infected. A perforated appendix can leak and infect the entire abdominal area, which can be life-threatening. An appendectomy is done under general anesthesia, which means you are asleep and do not feel any pain during the surgery. The surgeon makes a small cut in the lower right side of your belly area ...Read more

What makes my surgical scar turn red purple? I am 3 weeks post up open appendectomy.

Scar: In the normal phase of healing, it is common for the surgical scar to be a dark red color for several weeks. Scar color becomes lighter with prolonged healing, sometimes over 6-12 months. Watch for signs of infection (spreading redness in the skin around the scar). See your surgeon soon to check that you are healing properly. ...Read more

Have had open appendectomy for rupture and tubal, will I have gallbladder removed w/open surgery since I have lots of scar tissue?

Have had open appendectomy for rupture and tubal, will I have gallbladder removed w/open surgery since I have lots of scar tissue?

Probably not: It is very common for someone to have successful laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder) after previous ruptured appendicitis and other surgical procedures. In fact, "cutting" scar tissue/adhesiolysis is very commonly done at hands of skilled/experienced minimally invasive surgeons. You should seek an experienced surgeon. Recommend you seek out younger generation, laparoscopic surgeon. ...Read more

Have had open appendectomy and tubal, will I have to have open surgery to remove gallbladder due to 2 stomach sugery's? Quite sure scar tissue is lot

Unlikely: Hopefully all of your scar tissue is lower abdomen, the gallbladder is in the right upper abdomen under the rib edge. May need extra care getting your laparoscopy started, but your prior operations should not prevent you from having a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. ...Read more

How noticeable will appendectomy scars be?

How noticeable will appendectomy scars be?

Depends: What the scar looks like has too many variables to say without more information. It depends on the surgical approach: open or laporoscopic, and also if the appendix is ruptured at the time of surgery. No matter what the scar the surgery is important to save your life so heed the advice of your surgeon. The scars can maybe be revised in the furure. ...Read more

Appendectomy scars still hurt, what to do?

What would a scar look like from an appendectomy?

Depends...: Most appendectomies are now done laparoscopically. This leaves several very small scars on the abdomen where the instruments and laparoscope are inserted. Traditional open appendectomy is performed through a small horizontal incision in the right lower abdomen between the umbilicus and anterior superior iliac spine. ...Read more

What to do if I had a laproscopic appendectomy about 20 months ago, and now I look I think my scar is on the wrong side?

What to do if I had a laproscopic appendectomy about 20 months ago, and now I look I think my scar is on the wrong side?

Probably OK: An open appendectomy is performed via an incision right over the location of the appendix in the right lower part of the abdomen. A laparoscopic appendectomy is often done through 3 small incisions, 1 through or near the umbilicus and 2 elsewhere, often above the pubic bone and in the left side of the abdomen or upper right side. If concerned, speak with the surgeon who did the operation. ...Read more

Numbness after many years? Still numb over scar area from appendectomy after more than 10 years. Will the numbness ever go away?

At: At this point probably not. We have many small nerve fibers that enervate our skin. These nerves are very small and not seen during surgery unlike the larger nerves that control your movements. Incisions that run horizontally (hernia incisions, appendectomy incisions) may cross these nerves and cut them. Some of these nerves may regenerate slowly (over a period of months) and some do not ever fully regenerate. It does not cause any physical debilitation but it can be odd to have a numb spot. After 10 years it is very unlikely that sensation in that location will return. You are definitely not alone though, many people have numb areas over there scars. ...Read more

My daughter had an appendectomy 4 weeks ago and has what looks like suture strings coming out of two of her healed scars. Is this normal?

I had a lap appendectomy a month ago and I have a tiny bump underneath the scar on my left. When I push or massage it, it hurts the whole side. Normal.

Okay..., but...: To an extent, it's normally expected for some residual swelling usually from small expected tissue fluid such as blood. Generally speaking, it's ok and leave it alone as long as feeling less tender and smaller bumpy. It takes time with various pace among individuals. Meanwhile, try resisting the temptation to push it and minimize physical activity to strain abdominal muscles.

I had keyhole appendectomy 3 weeks ago, the bellybutton scar is a bit puckered & there's a hard lump under the scar at right end. Will this lump go away?

Most likely...: After a surgical procedure there is always healing tissue forming and it may be swollen and hard at one point. It usually resolves after a few weeks. However in some cases hard tissue may remain and stays there permanently. If the surgery is very recent it is hard to tell how it will finally heal. If very concerning make sure you f/u with your surgeon. ...Read more

Could scar tissue from my appendectomy make it more difficult to have a c-section?

Could scar tissue from my appendectomy make it more difficult to have a c-section?

It's possible: Any previous surgery can complicate your future surgery. After surgery, adhesions form within days of surgery on the inside of your body. During your next surgery or c-section, the surgeon may encounter these adhesions and depending on how extensive they are, the surgery could become complicated and longer. This is usually due to distorted anatomy and scar tissue. ...Read more

Had an lap appendectomy 3 weeks ago. Feeling pain on the ex-appendix place after eating, and pain on the post op scar (same location). Okay?

Sounds OK: You can expect to have some pain at the site of the incisions for sure. At those sites, the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall were separated. There will be some scarring and swelling.

Regarding the pain where the appendix used to be, it is less clear. Patients often experience some inflammation in the RLQ after this operation.

If your symptoms persist for much longer, call your surgeon. ...Read more

Will I have to have open cholecystomy since I have had an open appendectomy in the past?

No: Unless your appendix was perforated and caused a significant amount of inflammation in the abdomen, scarring post open appendectomy should not preclude a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A surgeon may need to be a little more careful when he enters the abdomen as adhesions may be present, but in the overwhelming number of cases a surgeon can negotiate around these adhesions. ...Read more
