Left ankle/lower leg is swollen. Bp normal. No salt. No excess fluids. Took hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) & atenolol. What's up?

Swelling: The swelling is likely caused by what is known as venous insufficiency. The elasticity of our veins decreases with age and doesn't recoil efficiently to move blood against gravity toward the heart. Support stockings, weight loss, leg elevation can help. If this is acute in onset and associated with pain you should see your doctor to rule out a more serious condition as a blood clot. ...Read more

Can eczema (i have been scratching) be the cause of a rather big open sore on the front of lower leg? Leg swollen tender and red around the wound.

Don't scratch!: I know... That is much easier said than done. But it is still true. If it is bad, see a dr. Anyway, you do need to prevent infection. Wash delicately w/ warm water. Use antibiotic cream, cover lightly. After that is resolved, obtain as effective as possible cortisone ointment to keep the itching under control. Eczema can be very difficult to eradicate, but it can be controlled. Don't scratch! ...Read more

Why is my foot and lower leg swollen after knee injury from a fall a week ago?

Why is my foot and lower leg swollen after knee injury from a fall a week ago?

Gravity: Typically, if there is swelling around the knee, gravity will push that fluid to the lower leg. Another possibility is that swelling from the knee joint will leak out the back of the knee through a Baker's cyst. Although unlikely, a blood clot has to be considered, especially if you've been immobilized. See a doctor very soon or call the one already treating you for more advice as soon as possible ...Read more

I had a knee injury on monday and today my lower leg and foot are extremely bruised and swollen. What to do?

See a physician: Significant knee injuries can cause calf and foot swelling and bruising. I would see a medical provider to make sure you have not developed a blood clot in your calf. Make sure to elevate leg, ice knee and do ankle pumps frequently to reduce swelling. Assuming there isn't a blood clot, X-rays to rule out a fracture will be needed. An exam can be done and probably MRI to look for ligament damage. ...Read more

2cm ulcer on middle, front lower leg. Swollen leg, red around wound. Does heal! Looks like venous ulcer. But gp says ezcema. And he knows best right?

See vein specialist: Leg ulcers are often caused by chronic venous insufficiency which is a problem that causes to much pressure to be in the veins near the skin. A venous specialist can diagnose and treat this condition. Our cure rate with venous ulcers is 97%. If it is infected I would recommend seeing a physician ASAP as these infections can progress quickly due to poor circulation. ...Read more
