If you've already tried rinsing your eye out with no luck under irrigating tap water with your hand serving as a little cup while the water rinses your eye, then it's time. Corneal irritation: There could be a number of things causing your irritation. It is impossible to diagnose the problem without a complete eye exam by an ophthalmologist. This is possibly a recurrent erosion syndrome. This usually occurs in patient with a prior history of a corneal injury. Treatment is usually with muro ointment at bedtime and muros drops during the day.

Recurrent "styes": You most likely have recurrent "styes." these are blocked "sweat ducts" on the eyelids. I tell my patients to get a damp wash cloth and pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Test it on your wrist to make sure it's not too hot. Place warm compress the closed eyelid for about5-10 minutes and re-heating as necessary. Use dilute baby shampoo to clean lids. Depends: If it is something that flew in from air breezes or ordinary activity you can try to flush it out with lubricating eyedrops. If it flew in with force (if you were drilling or grinding for instance), you need emergency attention. You might be able to see an object stuck to your cornea in a well lighted, magnifying mirror. If you are able to wear contact lenses with adequate tears and assuming its soft contact lenses that fit well, it should feel comfortable at least in 15 min, at most 30 min.
