I break my fibula so I have a walking cast and friday the doctor re going to get off so I want to know if I can walk normal?

In time: Assuming the break was clean and that healing is complete, you should be able to gradually get back to a normal walking pattern. Your muscles and joints will be stiff but will stretch back out with walking and returning to your day-to-day activities. If you are having difficulty, a short course of physical therapy may get you back on track. ...Read more

I had 4 metatarsals fractured, I wore a cast 4 weeks. Now its removed and the doctor told its healed. Is it normal I have pain, so cant walk properly?

Not So Fast: Four fractured metatarsals may need more time to be titled healed. Of course, not knowing the severity of the fractures, certainly makes the idea of more time debatable. I would think a couple more weeks in a removable cast walker would ease the transition wearing a cast to regular ambulation. You might call the physician and inquire about the possibility of using one. ...Read more

Found small lump below inside of ankle. Painful to walk and hurts during rest. Doc ordered MRI to rule out tpd or mass. Could I end up in a cast?

Depends on results: Depends on the results of mri. With tibialis posterior dysfunction, immobilization may not be enough, surgery may be necessary and then casting. Plus there will be a need to address the flat footed ness. If a mass consistent with a ganglion, have it drained as an in office service. Ask if they can remove it, as an in office service if not successful. If other mass, have removed. ...Read more

3 weeks since simple broken fibula and sprain. When I walk with airboot I still get a sharp pain in outer and inner ankle. Still throbs. Normal?

Yes: It is common to have pain for several weeks after an ankle sprain and can even persist for a few months in some cases. However, it depends on the level of pain, the frequency and severity to determine what to do next. If it is infrequent and short duration, that is to be expected. If it is frequent, severe and lasts a long time I recommend you return to your doctor for evaluation. ...Read more

I just got out in an air cast after 5 weeks non weight bearing. I was given allowance to walk, when I try I get a shock wave and pain. Is this normal?

Ortho knows best: I am assuming you sustained some kind of fracture. The ortho md probably saw the last xray films and noticed that you had proper callus formation so he changes the weight bearing status. It might feel uncomfortable at first but it should get better with time. Consider going for some physical therapy also if possible and don't forget to consider ICE, and/or NSAID as part of treatment. ...Read more

After I get my cast of for grade 3 ankle sprain will I just be able to walk normally without any other bracing? Cast on for 2-3 weeks

Perhaps not: After 3 weeks in a cast your ankle will be stiff and may take a few days to move well. It takes 6 weeks to get 90% strength to your healing ligaments, longer if you have nicotine or anti-inflammatory medications in your blood. Relatively flat shoes, and may need a brace.

How does a walking cast help a clean break through the tibia and fibula?

How does a walking cast help a clean break through the tibia and fibula?

It depends: Is the fractures are not displace the may be ok, if the fracture fragment are unstable then is necessary to fixate the fragments. If the fragments are not displace but are through the joint space then is necessary for the patient to be non weight during to avoid damage of the joint. If the fractures are just stress fractures or contusions a walking cast will be fine ...Read more

Re:fibula spiral fracture at ankle: additionally, I have had no pain since break, and walking lightly since cast was put on, question is about a boot?

Cast now boot later: Is this being treated without surgery (ie a nondisplaced break)? Anyhow, if so usually is 6 weeks immobilized and non weightbearing to allow for healing and minimize the risk of displacement. I tend to not use the boot until after this initial 6 week period. For a very hairline type break I might allow a boot as long as I can trust the patient to keep it on near full time. ...Read more

I had a clean break through my tibia and fibula, full leg cast 5 weeks now walking brace 2 mos, how long until 100%?

It depends.: Tibial shaft fractures heal slowly, but even after the fracture heals it can take many months for a patient to get back to their baseline activity. Return to full function depends on healing which in turn depends on many factors: how healthy is the patient, smoker?, was the injury high-energy or low?, was it an open fracture?, age of the patient, motivation of the patient, etc. ...Read more

I may have a tiny avulsion off the tip of my right distal fibula but my ankle and heel hurts to the touch and when I walk on it is this normal?

Avulsion: An avulsion occurs when soft tissue pulls a piece of bone off of its origin or insertion. An avulsion from the distal fibula could possibly represent an avulsion from a ligament resulting in instability of the peroneal muscles coursing in that area. I would recommend evaluation by a either a podiatrist or foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon. ...Read more

4 1/2 weeks after broken fibula and sprained ankle. Still painful to walk with airboot. Bad pain when trying to move ankle. Is this normal?

Might need PT: Make sure to follow up with your orthopedist as recommended, and let him/her know that you are still having significant pain. Sometimes, the fibula heals faster than the ankle sprain. Your orthopedist may give you exercises to do to increase ankle strength and flexibility, or he/she may refer you to a physical therapist to improve your use of the ankle. For now, avoid painful use of the ankle. ...Read more

Yes: Any exercise will do. Walking jogging, swimming, will help. Do not be concerned about being skinny. If you are otherwise healthy, being skinny is not a disease.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
