Phlegm is the thick, sticky mucus secreted by the surface of the respiratory tract during a cold or other respiratory infection. Normal mucus is not phlegm, but a protective layer secreted ...Read more
Is seeing a small amount of blood in phlegm due to allergies normal. I spit some out this morning and it scared me?
Take notice: A little blood in your mucus which is related to allergies is not too unusual. However, this is something you should watch. It might indicate that there are other problems, such as a lesion in your nose, polyps, or a developing sinus infection. If you continue to notice this, you should see an ENT doctor. ...Read more

For a few days there has sometimes been tiny drops of blood when I bring up phlegm/spit. Also have a pain in the middle of my chest. F/24 don't smoke?
May need evaluation: This may be related to nose bleed going down to your lungs. The most common cause of bleeding from lungs is a coughing spell which can break small blood vessels in the bronchial tubes. If the chest hurts it may suggest bronchitis, angina, chest wall pain, and musculoskeletal pain. Is it tender to touch. Good to know that you do not smoke. Further evaluation is necessary if symptoms persists. ...Read more

I have been spitting phlegm with little blood these past few days without cough. I have also a history of tuberculosis but has been treated last year?
Please get checked: If you have some phlegm with blood in it, you need to see a doctor. Tuberculosis can be tricky-especially in the Philippines where there is a lot of it. Do you have any fevers? What about appetite or weight loss? Those are symptoms of TB. Sometimes TB can be resistant to medications, and I wonder if you took all the medicine you were prescribed? Hope you feel better. See below: This can be due to two things primarily - especially this time of year. First, if you are using nasal steroids, that increases the risk of nosebleeds, even minor. Second, if you live in a cold climate (especially this week), then heat will dry out the air you breathe which can dry out your nasal passages causing it to be more prone to bleeding. Try humidified air or using steam to remoisturize. ...Read more
My two boys have RSV and now I seem congested and my phlegm I spit up is clear with blood tinged red could this be related?
Maybe, maybe not: Adults get RSV rather often but seldom have any lower airway problems like small babies. Their immune system has built up some resistance to the germ over time and an infection limited to the nose & throat are common. This may certainly make you have increased secretions but should not make them blood tinged. ...Read more
Got phlegm from the nose for 2 days in the morning. When I spit it out there's a small amount of blood, no cough. Btw I'm from & currently in hong kong?
Spitting out: Small amount of blood is ok due to irritation in the nasal mucosa. Colds, flu, allergies, sinus congestion can be a factor. Blowing nose hard and picking on your nose can do it too. ...Read more
What could be the cause of spitting brown phlegm in the morning? After a couple spits it's clear and doesn't do it again till morning. No blood when I blow my nose
Need diagnosis: Brown phlegm is probably not from the oral cavity or from the gums. Obviously, you need a proper diagnosis. Although you say there is no nasal bleeding, I would worry more about old blood coming from the esophagus or stomach. An ENT doctor or a gastroenterologist should be consulted. ...Read more
I spit a phlegm with a very small amount of blood. Is this a serious problem or it this just a wound in my throat because of coughing hard?
Coughing blood: A cough which produces blood may come from one of two sources. It may simply be blood which drains from the nasal passages down the back of the throat or may be originating in the lungs themselves. Often associated with bronchitis or inflammation, however hirmoptysis or coughing blood should be evaluated by your physician in either case. ...Read more
I have chest pains and I'm spitting out a lot of phlegm with some blood on it. My tonsils have some white spots on them and I don't have a cough.?
I am spitting out phlegm with blood in it after having a cold, but no coughing or respiratory problems. Was also exposed to mold in water bottle.
Sinus infection?: You may have a sinus infection which happens 10% of the time after a cold. Do not believe a single exposure to mold in water bottle could have caused it however unless you started spitting out blood soon after the exposure (even then it will be a rather rare event). ...Read more
Small streaks of blood in phlegm/spit returned after 10 days on doxycycline for sinus infection. Not coughing it up do I need more meds?
Sinus disease: The sinuses are aerated chambers that often get closed off and infected. Antibiotics are helpful but the important thing is to open them up again so they will drain. This is often achieved by using gentle saline solution or inhaled nasal steroids. Make sure the air you are breathing is not too dry. Occasionally topical antibiotics will help with the healing. ...Read more
IM 25 weeks pregnant and have had a severe cold / cough this week. Bloody nose the past 3 days, mucus is a very dark green. Today my phlegm had blood?
See a doctor: With these sorts of symptoms, you need answers. I would worry that your platelet count might have dropped as a result of the viral infection - allowing the blood to become thinner, such that you'd have nose bleeding and blood in the sputum. Hopefully you're plugged into an Ob/Gyn practice - I would call them and try to get seen today. If it's after hours and you're not doing well- go to the ER. ...Read more
Do I have TB risk? Iam from the a country where tb is common. I have thick white mucus/phlegm, but NO cough. How ever there's a time that I spit blood with it (twice/thrice only) today I spit with yellow mucous I done a chest x ray and its negative.
I would suggest an evaluation and upper airway examination. A TB test is advised.
See a doctor: Sore throat and bleeding needs to be seen by a doctor. An otolaryngologist (ENT) can easily look in your throat to see where it might be coming from. The flexible scope is very easy to tolerate with local anesthetic. I have had it done many times to teach med students how to do it. It is usually nothing serious--bronchitis, nose bleed, etc. But you need to be sure. ...Read more
