I am allergic to penicillin and I have tonsillitis what should I do if surgery?

I am allergic to penicillin and I have tonsillitis what should I do if surgery?

Alternatives: There are plenty of non-penicillin alternatives that can be used; Erythromycin is one of the most common. If you really need to be treated with a penicillin derivative, your allergist can desensitize you prior to starting the antibiotic. But it is always best to use an alternative so that you don't run the risk of having a penicillin reaction. ...Read more

I've been told I have bacterial tonsillitis, allergic to penicillin, been on clarithromycin for 7 days, still not gone What should I do?

Tonsillitis: clarithromycin should take care of streptococcal pharyngitis (tonsillitis), which is the most common cause for that infection, however, other organisms can also infect the tonsils, viral, fungal or other bacteria. You need to see your doctor again for re-evaluation, probablyyou will need to see an ENT specialist, after ruling out other causes as infectious mononucleosis, best wishes ...Read more

On penicillin for tonsillitis. Been on it before. How long does it take to notice side effects?

Side effects rare: Side effects are rare with penicillin. If it's oral, you could have diarrhea after a few days, but not if you had an injection. Most likely you'll have no side effects at all, less than one chance in a hundred. ...Read more

What happens if tonsillitis does not clear up after a course of penicillin?

What happens if tonsillitis does not clear up after a course of penicillin?

Bacteria resistance: Tonsillitis can have different causes. Antibiotics are indicated for tonsillitis with a positive culture for strep. Some bacteria are resistant to penicillin causing antibiotic treatment failure. If the symptoms have not resolved after appropriate antibiotic therapy then re-check is indicated. Perhaps the cause is not bacterial. ...Read more

I am on penicillin 2000mg for tonsillitis. It's now my fourth day on them and I can smell it in my urine, is this normal?

Entirely normal: Penicillin and related drugs (ampicillin, amoxicillin, and others) have a characteristic strong odor, and are excreted in the urine. Therefore, strong urine odor is normal when taking penicillin. No problem, nothing to worry about. But if you remain concerned, discuss it with your doctor. ...Read more

Got bacterial tonsillitis + have been given penicillinV, I haven't collected penicillin + has started to feel better should I still get the penicillin?

I have had tonsillitis for 3 months, 8 lots of antibiotics/penicillin injections 2weeks ago, now having3more. Why isn't it going away? Immune disorder?

Chronic tonsillitis: Hopefully I understand your question correctly, but I think you're saying you are having chronic tonsil issues, perhaps with pain or sore throat or bad breath or swallowing issues. This could mean the tonsils are chronically infected with "biofilms" and that you may need to be evaluated for tonsillectomy. Other issues like reflux or masses should also be evaluated for at that appointment. ...Read more

Hello have tonsillitis and have been put on penicillin two tablets four times daily without food, my urine is a florecent. Yellow is this normal?

Don't worry: You might even smell the antibiotic in your urine. The color is usually related to your level of hydration. The clearer the better. If you are fighting an infection it is best to drink lots and lots of fluids. You will be helping your body fight the infection and you will feel better. Most people are somewhat dehydrated normally. When sick, they tend to drink less, and this makes things worse. ...Read more

I was given penicillin yesterday due to tonsillitis but have been sick twice today is that normal? I am also 3 months late on my period I need help!

Vomiting: Get a pregnancy test. Get your doc to write for Flonase to use at night, the steroid turns your post nasal drip into an anti inflammatory. Dink electrolyte fluid, 2 Aleve 2x per day and zantac generic at 150 mg. If you are 12 weeks pregnant the worst of the nausea is behind you. You will get past it but do the basics and see if your pregnant; if not it is unsealed to your tonsils. ...Read more

What treatments are appropriate for tonsillitis when you have a penicillin allergy?

Zithromax: Azithromycin (zithromax) is a good option for streptococcal tonsillitis. There is some cross-reactivity between penicillins and cephalosporins (such as keflex), and these would not be my first choice. Many infections are caused by viruses, and in this situation antibiotics are not effective. ...Read more

On penicillin for tonsillitis since yesterday, still really strong pain. Now have ulcers on back and sides of tongue?

Virus not strep?: The ulcers suggest you might not have strep throat, the main kind of pharyngitis or tonsillitis that responds to penicillin. Ulcers suggest a viral infection, like herpangina, coxsackie virus, and others. A new infection with oral herpes also could do it. Return to your doctor ASAP for additional exam, testing, and perhaps treatment with an anti-herpes drug like valacyclovir. Good luck! ...Read more

On penicillin for tonsillitis since yesterday, pain still really strong. Developed ulcers on sides n back of tongue, any advice pls?

Probably not tonsils: I think it's more likely there's one unifying disease process here-and with tongue ulcers, I would strongly recommend going back to the doctor. I would say you needed a biopsy for a full evaluation of what you have. Things may have started out with a case of 'tonsillitis' but it was probably this primary disease. Not sure if there's any history in the family of lupus or other rheumatologic disease ...Read more

Hi, was diagnosed with tonsillitis yesterday and given a 10 day course of antibiotics - penicillin. However this morning my tonsils are black?!

Side effect: Some people have tongue, throat, or tonsil discoloration when they take certain medications, including bismuth (pepto-bismol) and some antibiotics. If your tonsils are no more painful, you have no new discharge or foul odor, this is most likely a side effect of the medicine. You should keep taking the penicillin, unless you have any above symptoms - then see your doctor again. ...Read more

Emetophobic. I am taking penicillin for tonsillitis. Taken it many times before but nervous this time. How common are vomiting side effects. Scared?

Penicillin.: Although any medication can cause side effects, vomiting would be unlikely in this setting. Although vomiting can be a rare side effect of penicillin, if you do not have any nausea or vomiting to start with, it is doubtful that you will get any now. If you have any side effects from the medication, however, see your doctor. Good luck. ...Read more

I've had a really bad cough for 3+ weeks now then couldn't swallow went to docs diagnosed tonsillitis they gave me penicillin but now its worse.?

Alot worse?: If worse it needs to be checked. If you develop trouble swallowing to the point of drooling, painful opening of mouth, tender lymph node in neck opposite tonsil, you could have a peritonsillar abscess. If it's the cough that's worse, so long as you're not coughing up green or yellow, it's likely viral and will pass. If coughing until vomiting, may have pertussis, and need different antibiotic. ...Read more

I keep getting tonsillitis, despite X 2 Penicillin V prescriptions. AOS blood tests "upper range of normal" what treatment would help?

Don't overtreat: Penicillin won't prevent future attacks, and is appropriate only if there's good reason to think this is strep throat. Antistreptolysin O titers are useful only if actual rheumatic fever is a consideration; don't over-interpret these or any other labs especially when they're in reference range or you'll go crazy. Ask about tonsillectomy given that there's variable evidence / thought. ...Read more

Can penicillin v cause diarrhea and gastrointestinal pain? I take penicillin v for my tonsillitis but I feel sick in my belly. Thanks!

Possibly: You may be having an adverse reaction to the pen v or you may be taking pen vk which contains potassium to which some are very sensitive. Since you are not likely to be taking this for more than 10 days, if it continues see your doctor for further evaluation. ...Read more
