I am a 70 year old healthy woman and how often should I have pelvic exams?

Normal PAPs?: If your last 3 pap smears have been normal, you don't have a new sexual partner & no history of "female" cancer, then you don't need to get pap smears after age 65-70 (depends which guideline you pick). You should still see your doc for your annual physical though.

Should women over 70 years old continue to have mammograms and pelvic exams.?

Should women over 70 years old continue to have mammograms and pelvic exams.?

Yes: Mammograms should be continued until about the age of 85. The best chance for detecting breast cancer is the mammogram. Pelvic exams are important until about that same age as the risk for ovarian cancer is greatest at the ages of 60 to 80. The best chance for detecting ovarian cancer is the pelvic exam.

Unfortunately,: Unfortunately, gynecological exams aren't necessarily very comfortable for anyone! That being said, pid can make your cervix and uterus extra sensitive thus making the exam extremely painful. Actually, one of the symptoms of pid is a very painful exam - so don't think that every exam will feel like that! This should resolve once the infection is treated. One of the other most common reasons for pain with exam is that your muscles around the opening of your vagina might be very tense. Since your first experience with an exam was during pid, you may be unconsciously tensing your muscles from the memory of how bad it hurt before. By practicing relaxation techniques such as breathing deeply or trying to relax your legs in the stirrups during the exam may help with the discomfort. Also, discuss this with your doctor. You are not the first, nor the last woman to have this exact problem. Your doctor may have other helpful suggestions to make your exams more comfortable.

Should a 15 year old have a pelvic exam?

Should a 15 year old have a pelvic exam?

Depends on variables: With today's noninvasive medical devices like ultrasound & ct, the need for a manual pelvic exam is not as pressing. It is needed if the 16 yo is sexually active and has any signs of conditions related to that activity. If not active, most delay the pelvic to within 2 yrs of becoming sexually active or 21 yo.

Why would my 15 year old need a pelvic exam?

Teen Gynecology: There are many gynecologic reasons for a teen to see a gynecologist. However, to need a pelvic exam implies that there is a sexual activity-related complaint. Whatever the reason, it is wise to provide the consultation.

Will clinic allow a 17 year old to go in for pelvic exam by male resident without adult supervision?

Will clinic allow a 17 year old to go in for pelvic exam by male resident without adult supervision?

RN in room: It is unusual for a male physician to examine a female patient unclothed without a chaperone present, typically a nurse. However, due to confidentiality concerns, a parent may not need to be present, at the patient's request. This in no way implies that the physical exam would be unobserved or unsupervised.

In a few months I'm supposed to have a pelvic exam. I'm 21 years old and a virgin. What will the exam include?

Its quick: You and your doctor will chat about why you are there. If an exam is needed, It may involved just looking at the outside. Sometimes (If the hymen permits) a small speculum is inserted into the vagina. Swabs of the cervix will be taken. Your doc may need to insert a gloved finger to check the uterus and ovaries. Its very quick and you are done. Best wishes!

Am a virgin 17 years old and haven't had my period for 4 months am going to my doctor tomorrow will he be taking a pelvic exam from me? Am scared

Exam: Pelvic exams scare me too! Unfortunately they do have to be done. Let your doctor know it is the first time you have done this. He or she will explain what goes on and it will be over. A pelvic exam usually consists of the doctor looking at the outside of your genitals. Then they usually do a speculum exam (the most uncomfortable part) and then they touch your cervix,

Does a woman who had a hysterectomy, need a pelvic exam and pap test?

Yes: All women need yearly pelvic exams to monitor for problems that aren't necessarily related to pap smears. Pap smears are no longer needed if the hysterectomy was performed for benign indications and there is no prior history of moderate or severe precancerous changes.
