I always have blocked nose after swimming. Am I allergic to the pool?

Pool & stuffy noses: While pools are sometimes sources of allergens like molds & pollen (especially if outdoors), most nasal congestion following swimming is likely due to irritants like chlorine, temperature changes from getting in & out of the water, or positional changes (as you swim, blood that normally pools in the legs while upright flows towards the head more easily and fills the nasal tissues). ...Read more

I am allergic to chlorine (asthmatic reaction), and after a 2 hours around an indoor pool I have a headache. Are the two related? Can I swim tonight?

Chlorine sensitive: Your doctor that treats you for asthma may know better. Your history would be informative here. The chlorine reaction is more irritant in nature, so it is ok to have exposure (not necessarily life threatening). You may benefit from using inhalant medication including corticosteroid inhaler or albuterol before swimming. The headache may or may not be related to respiratory effects. ...Read more

I have prob in my nose/every early morning I get sneeze and after that nose get block and started running watery.which med I should have it or spray?

Sounds like allergy.: There are some good allergy meds available OTC; now there's nasal spray. Usually the best Tx for the kind of allergy you describe is a combo of a daily allergy pill an a nasal spray. I recommend my patients use the combo for 2wks then stop. If they are all better, save the 2 meds for the next allergy episode. If their symptoms begin again, I have them re-start and see their PMD. ...Read more

Yes: You may have a sensitivity to the bird and this type of reaction is typical with re-exposure after prolonged non-exposure. Remove the bird to see if you improve. Recommend seeing an Allergist to better define risk and to determine if anything else in the environment may be contributing to your symptoms. Also chest discomfort may suggest underlying asthma or more severe bird sensitivity. ...Read more

I am extremely congested with mucus in my nose to the point i can't breath or blow out my nose, should I go the hospital I have taken Claritin (loratadine) and Advil congestion relief already

Nasal : Nasal congestion is pretty miserable, but without high fever, dizziness, or severe pain, you are better off calling your doctor's office for an appointment than going to the hospital. Often congestion is not from mucus buildup, but is from swelling of the nasal tissues so there is nothing to blow out. The best things to do until your appointment are to run a humidifier in the room you sleep in, drink hot liquids (like tea or broth), or take a hot shower and breathe in the steam. These can all help you feel better. Good luck! ...Read more

Itching: See your physician to rule out various things. It may involve blood work. My wife has a similar problem as was diagnosed as idiopathic urticaria. Big word for unknown itching. Antihistamines will help, they also will give you a dry mouth. Take extra care of your teeth as xerostomia(dry mouth) makes you vulnerable to tooth decay. Fluoride rinses and brushing after meals ideal. Limit sports drinks. ...Read more
