Hypothyroid/hashimoto's. Levels low. Constant bloating, distended belly, water retention. Tried more water, fiber helped little. What else can I do?!

See your doc: If your thyroid levels are low you may need to adjust the dose of your replacement. It sounds as though your symptoms are consistent with an inadequately treated underactive thyroid. Even if your levels were relatively normal, your meds may still need adjusting while you continue to have symptoms. ...Read more

This results in weight loss, a quick heartbeat, sweating, nervousness, ...Read more

I am constantly retaining water I take a water pill but it only gives temporary relief just by standing I retain a lot of water in my knees and legs ?

Suffer from chronic constipation. I have hypothyroid. My gastro md says its that. Md recommends miiralax up to 4x a day. I drink a lot of water & exe?

A lot of Miralax (polyethylene glycol): After being on thyroid replacement recheck blood level of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)-takes about 3 weeks to change. Meanwhile, check diet-adquate fiber foods like beans, whole grains, fruits, vegs, fluids, activity. Check meds, otc, supplements, e.g. Calcium can be constipating. Get enough oil in diet. Age? May need colonoscopy to check things ok inside. Miralax is safe, but 4x/d is a lot. ...Read more

Could high calcium in the blood and intake of levothyroxine for hypothyroid be cause of strong foul odor in urine? I drink ~3 6oz cups of water a day

Could high calcium in the blood and intake of levothyroxine for hypothyroid be cause of strong foul odor in urine? I drink ~3 6oz cups of water a day

Unlikely: Neither high calcium nor levo. Will cause foul odor. Most common cause of dark, strong urine is dehydration. You should be drinking minimum of 100 ounces of fluids/day or enough to keep urine color fairly clear, not only to help lower calcium but to prevent kidney stones . Other causes of foul urine are UTI and certain foods and meds. A urinalysis and culture can determine if UTI present. ...Read more

I have cfs & am hypothyroid. Recently fingertips on left hand sporadically get tight&wrinkly but not in water. I had a + ANA 160 nucleolar. Harmless?

Yes.: First if hypothyroidsim was detected, then you are on meds and no longer hypothyoid. An ANA is found in 5% of the population, and is usually false positive. But you have an autimmine disease already: low thyroid, usually the result of hashimoto's thyroiditis. Cfs is so non-specific, there is frequently no cause found, except poor sleep. You ANA needs to be reflexed to see if it is important. ...Read more

Salt a bigger issue: If you have normal kidney function, your kidneys can discard excessive fluids you might drink. The bigger issue for water retention is salt intake which makes you retain additional water through hormonal actions and lead to retention. ...Read more

Is it possible to be dehydrated and bloated/retaining water at the same time?

Yes: It is possible to have edema (swelling in the ankles/legs) due to fluid retention and at the same time have intravascular volume contraction. This is a common occurrence in heart failure, cirrhosis, and nephrotic syndrome where serum albumen is low & powerful diuretics are used. It's less likely but possible in healthy people. Venous insufficiency with dehydration is an example. ...Read more
