Hypopharyngeal Sphincter Function
I have hypopharyngeal carcinoma status post inoperable tumor there is cervical spine destruction.
How much the expected duration of survival؟
So sorry to see this: Chinchilla--very sorry to hear of your cancer status. It seems quite severe, as it is involving the bone already. I am not sure of your general health status and so it is tough to guess. You said it is inoperable, but is there chance of chemo and/or radiation? The type of cancer and chemo/rad status, and health status can influence survival. I suggest talking to your oncologist. Wishing you luck! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What foods = quick bowel transit? Have low anal sphincter function, bms take 4+ hrs in small pieces. Work is suffering. I eat lots of insoluble fibre.
Mineral oil: Try this: every night take 30 cc of prune juice(if you are not diabetic) and /or another 30 cc of mineral oil. You should have bm by morning time. This remedy is not very tasteful. It however work practically in 100% of cases. Fibers likely will not help. Fibers create bulk to stimulate gut mechanically. Mineral oil and prune juice stimulate gut's motion by biochemical means. ...Read more
25 yr old F (not overweight) with chronic URQ pain for 2+ yrs. No stones but HIDA showed 23 % function. Unsure if removal is worth the risks, SOD? Greatly appreciate prof. opinions and likelihood of Sphincter of Oddi problems & seriousness of it.
Not very serious: The main problem with sphincter of oddi dysfunction is that it is an annoying pain that is intermittent and gets worse after eating. The treatment includes lifestyle changes (low fat diet), vasodilators like nifedipine, non opioid analgesics. Gastroenterologists can inject botox or make a cut at the sphincter of oddi and that works in more than 70% of the cases. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Low anal sphincter function. Biofeedback, supplements, diet changes not helping. Ideas to help flow? Stools are soft, just can't go more than bits.
IMPROVE BOWEL TONE: Constipation and/or poor bowel function can sometimes be helped by improving internal mileu with professional quality acidophilus as this good bacteria is needed for digestion in the colon. Psyllium husk and/or clay powder (e.g., bentonite) can help absorb toxins and should be processed over 24 hours. Consider also doing a series of colonics (e.g., minimum of 3) to remove any interfering debris. ...Read more
Can a pinched nerve of the L4, L5, S1, or S2 (racepinephrine) cause difficulty passing stool, i.e., rectum/sphincter won't relax/function properly?
?cauda equina syndr.: If you possess a large ruptured disk in the lower back which compresses multiple nerve roots, or if you have lumbar stenosis, this could affect both bowel and bladder, but a localized pinched nerve at the root level otherwise will have not influence on bowel dysfnctn. ...Read more
Was given amitriptyline for lack of full anal sphincter function (basically, poop gets stuck & i can urge it out). Not constipated. Will this help it?
Not sure: Amitriptylene has certain side effects which oppose bowel activity and slow it down. Constipation can result. If the doctor's idea is that your anal sphincter tone is too high, amitriptylene could help. I'll add that if this doesn't work, certain homeopathic remedies may be more useful for you. You could consult a professional homeopath to receive the one most likely to work for you. ...Read more
A muscle contraction: When muscles contract they shorten. In the sphincter, the muscles are laid in a circular fashion around the opening that passes urine at the base of the baldder. When they contract, they shorten, thereby tightening the opening in the middle and shutting flow. The sphincter is under the control of both voluntary and involuntary nervous systems. That explains incontinence when someone is very scared. ...Read more
