What causes hypoparathyroidism?

What causes hypoparathyroidism?

Many different cause: Underactivity of the parathyroid glands probably most commonly results from thyroid surgery or treatment which can damage the small imbedded glands. It is quite rare and the list of potential causes is very long. One should consider viral or autoimmune damage to the glands as well as many know genetic inborn error of metabolism. I've been diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism yet have normal calcium levels, is this normal?

I've been diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism yet have normal calcium levels, is this normal?

Can be normal: It all depends on the severity of your parathyroid underactivity. Causes of hypoaparathyroidism can also be transient in nature. Make sure you get your magensium and vitamin d (both, 25 and 1, 25 vitamin d) levels checked and also to do 24 hr urine collection for calcium. Discuss this with your endocrinologist. ...Read more

Question on high calcium levels. Is that the test for hypoparathyroidism?

Question on high calcium levels. Is that the test for hypoparathyroidism?

Wrong direction!: Testing calcium in the blood is helpful in evaluating parathyroid function but in the case of hypo (low) parathyroidism, one would expect calcium to be low or lower normal range, not high. The parathyroid gland puts out parathyroid hormone in an effort to help keep calcium levels in the bloodstream up, so when it's under active the calcium tends to fall. ...Read more

Calcitriol: calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D used for treatment of hypocalcemia ( low calcium) associated with Hypoparathyroidism. Paraclcitriol is used for treatment of Hyperparathyroism associated with kidney failure. Very soon next year we may have a parathyroid hormone analauge to treat Hypoparathyroidism. ...Read more

What is hypoparathyroidism? What's the treatment to this? How is it connected to hypokalemic periodic paralysis and renal disease? Please answer.

What is hypoparathyroidism? What's the treatment to this? How is it connected to hypokalemic periodic paralysis and renal disease? Please answer.

Low parathyroid horm: Parathyroid glands make a hormone that regulates calcium in the blood. Damage from thyroid surgery or autoimmune disease are main causes. Severe muscle spasm is the chief symptom. High doses of calcium & vit D+ magnesium, is the treatment. No hormone replacement is yet available. Not connected to periodic paralysis. Rx. can cause kidney stones and could lead to renal failure, not common. ...Read more

I have postsurgical hypoparathyroidism. Now On ca 3 tablets/day and calcitriol. Still experiencing numbness and fatigue. Any suggestions?

Need more: Hi. I'm sorry for your situation. That's the one hormone deficiency in endocrinology we don't have hormone replacement for. Have your doctor check an ionized calcium. Could increase calcium and/or calcitriol. Want blood calcium to be at the low end of normal, because you'll lose a lot of calcium in your urine and we don't you to make kidney stones (most people say they're worse than numbness!). ...Read more
