Info @ anxietybc.org: Learning about anxiety problems can be huge help. Living in a state of perpetual doubt takes its toll. Ur primitive brain regions, in an effort 2 protect u from harm, r sounding a steady stream of false alarms. But those same primitive brain regions' "freak outs" r very convincing ; fool "higher thinking" areas of ur brain. Suggest learning about ocd — how it works. See: http://bit. CBT. Can worsen it.: CBT combines cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy. Cognitive therapy attempts to modify the patient’s dysfunctional thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes (eg, good health is a symptom-free state). How can I deal with a loved one's hypochondriasis without sounding dismissive of his complaints? (other than suggesting therapy, which I have).

Treat with Love: Listening is a great way to demonstrate caring. The core of a hypochondriasis is fear--recognize the fear and support your love one in finding peace and acceptance of fear as a part of life. Go for counseling together--with the idea of supporting your loved one on the journey of seeking freedom from the fear. Love and support with encouragement is the best medicine. ...Read more

THE BEST: The best is the one that works. Even better is one like that without side effects (for you).
Cymbalta has had a lot of study and lots of use — generally works. Also, sertraline. And with all of them you have to titrate up to the dose that works.
Fluoxetine tends to work very quickly and the right dose and has the advantage of a 2 wk 1/2 life — that makes rebound reactions less likely when you stop. ...Read more

Hi docs, my friend showing signs of a somatoform disorder, probably serious hypochondriasis-- how to be supportive?

Tread carefully: Educate yourself. Look up these conditions to understand the person isn't "faking" it; there are psychological dimensions. Check in on your own level of frustration, try to be reassuring without being overly optimistic, avoid challenging denial or irrational beliefs, encourage appropriate use of doctors and mental health referrals, and avoid becoming burned out or overly involved, yourself. ...Read more

My brother is always afraid of having or getting a disease.I'm afraid that he has hypochondriasis. What should I do? Thank you.

Nothign to do: Some hypochondriacs are cured only by going through medical school. If your brother recognizes his fears are unrealistic, he may be willing to learn some tricks from a good cognitive-behavioral or other therapist to get his mind back on track with the serious business of living in the world as it is. Beyond this, just be a good and affectionate family member, criticizing only when really needed. ...Read more
