Hdl (Definition)

HDL, or high density lipoprotein, is a molecule in the body that is responsible for the transport of lipids (fats) from various organs including blood vessels back to the liver for processing and possible elimination. Because it helps prevent accumulation of lipids in blood vessels, HDL cholesterol is ...Read more

What are the causes of high triglycerides and low hdl?

What are the causes of high triglycerides and low hdl?

Sweets & alcohol: Most common cause is high intake of sweets (candy, juice, pop, gatorade, etc.), uncontrolled diabetes (high blood sugar), and consumption of alcohol (which our body process as a type of sugar). Avoid sweets, especially those in liquid form, control diabetes (if you have it), limit alcohol to 1-2 drinks per day at most. Exercise at least 5 days a week, keep a healthy weight. ...Read more

What is the risk of low HDL when the total cholesterol is below the high limits?

What is the risk of low HDL when the total cholesterol is below the high limits?

1 risk factor score: The national cholesterol education program suggests that having a significantly low (<40) HDL is equivalent to having a major risk factor like smoking, high bp, high ldl, diabetes or fan history of early coronary disease. This is usually a genetically based phenomenon, and thus far drugs have not been effective on improving outcomes by trying to raise hdl. Exercise and red wine (moderate) may help. ...Read more

What is the correlation between high hba1c 8.19, total cholestrol 130.2, low HDL 31.6, and low LDL c?

What is the correlation between high hba1c 8.19, total cholestrol 130.2, low HDL 31.6, and low LDL c?

Diabetes Insulin LPL: Patients with diabetes, Insulin resistance and or high triglycerides often have changes in lipoprotein lipase levels, driving the exchange of triglycerides with cholesterol between vldl and LDL and hdl. This creates cholesterol depleted LDL and HDL particles, hence the measure of cholesterol in HDL and LDL is low. In addition small HDL particles are unstable and break apart, hence low levels. ...Read more

My cholesterol is low at 99. My LDL and HDL are also both low. HDL 34.6. LDL 46. Triglycerides 86. Should I be concerned?

My cholesterol is low at 99. My LDL and HDL are also both low. HDL 34.6. LDL 46. Triglycerides 86. Should I be concerned?

No. Low LDL is good.: Try raising HDL. Look for foods with monounsaturated fats (olive oil, etc.). Read up on such foods on nutrition websites. Avoiding sugars and simple starches should help raise HDL (good cholesterol). Fruits have a lot of sugar, and most breads are simple starches. Protein such as chicken breast, pork loin (whiter meat), and tofu can be eaten instead of carbs. Exercising will also raise the HDL. ...Read more

Is low HDL as much a cardiovascular risk as high ldl? Does HDL numbers really matter if LDL is under control? Lots of conflicting info out there.

Is low HDL as much a cardiovascular risk as high ldl? Does HDL numbers really matter if LDL is under control? Lots of conflicting info out there.

Agreed: Yes, lots of conflicting material. Right now, it seems that high ldl, especially LDL particle number is high can be a culprit - get a more sophisticated blood test than a "calculated ldl." you can have a normal LDL at 99, but the particle number may be 1800 which is high. Hdl should be over 40, but many people genetically have them in the 20's. ...Read more

Is low HDL as much a cardiovascular risk as high ldl? Does HDL numbers really matter if LDL is under control? Lots of conflicting info out there.

Bottom line is: You want your HDL as high as possible and LDL as low as possible. In women, low HDL is an independent risk factor for premature heart disease regardless of ldl. So both are important. ...Read more

I have Hi Total cholesterol ~225 and Tri-Gelsrides was 575 also low HDL 26 at the same time i have boarder line osteoporosis ,prephiralneuriitis?

I have Hi Total cholesterol ~225 and Tri-Gelsrides was 575 also low HDL 26 at the same time i have boarder line osteoporosis ,prephiralneuriitis?

? why osteoporosis: While your blood lipids/cholesterol are not ideal the real question is why does a young male have osteoporosis and peripheral neuritis? A search for the underlying cause of these conditions is mandatory: adrenal gland problems, diabetes, liver/kidney disease, thyroid/other glandular problems, etc. The high triglycerides contribute to low HDL. Drug therapy not particularly helpful: focus is diet! ...Read more

I have low HDL cholesterol (usually 35-50 mg/dl), which is common in my family. What can do with lifestyle to increase it? I already exercise daily.

I have low HDL cholesterol (usually 35-50 mg/dl), which is common in my family. What can do with lifestyle to increase it? I already exercise daily.

Diet & exercise: Moderate exercise (about 30 minutes five times a week) reduces LDL cholesterol and raises HDL cholesterol. Smoking can lower HDL levels, so stop smoking if you do. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean sources of protein. Include monounsaturated fats in your diet- olive oil/canola oil. Moderate consumption of alcohol may also positively impact HDL levels. 1 glass of wine a day. ...Read more

Recommended food for high tg, LDL and low HDL patients?

Recommended food for high tg, LDL and low HDL patients?

Back to basics: Thanks for your data! numbers all look pretty good. Tg is only mildly elevated and would respond best to low calorie diet with focus on reducing high glycemic index foods and fructose. Tg may come down, but I am not sure there is great benefit to that. Real focus of treatment is LDL but that is great. Eat plenty of fish. Regular aerobic exercise. Maintain healthy weight. ...Read more

Why is low HDL cholesterol bad for you?

Complicated: The conventional wisdom is that HDL helps to remove cholesterol from your arteries and epidemiological studies clearly show that the lower the hdl, the higher the risk and vice versa but drugs that raise the HDL have had disappointing results making the conventional wisdom suspect. It may just be a marker for something else. Bottom line: we're not sure why but it is. ...Read more

What does it mean if I have low HDL cholesterol?

Heart disease risk.: Hdl (high density lipoprotein) protects the body by removing excess cholesterol from the walls of arteries. A high HDL (>60 mg/dl) can protect the body from heart disease. A low HDL (<30 mg/dl), on the other hand, is a risk factor for developing heart disease. A patient with low HDL can exercise, lose weight, or take medication to raise it. ...Read more

What are the risk of high cholesterol and low HDL and how it be fixed?

What are the risk of high cholesterol and low HDL and how it be fixed?

LDL Not Cholesterol: Artery disease: typically beings ~age 7; yet asymptomatic for decades. Ldl particles entering artery walls is the primary driver; HDL helps ? ds. Cholesterol, a fat made by all our cells, has never been correct issue but promoted because (as 1 fat within all lipoprotein particles) it was/is cheaper to measure & if very ? (esp. Fasting) correlates with ? LDL particles. See NMR particle test many tx. ...Read more
