Doctor insights on:
Hyperthyroidism And Estrogen Levels
Why hyperthyroid can cause gynecomastia? What's the connection thyroid hormone and estrogen, testosterone?
Complex interaction: Gynecomastia can occur in hyperthyroidism due to an induced increase in peripheral aromatase activity leading to an increase in circulating estrogen levels, and thus decreased testosterone levels. Most of the estrogen in men is made from the peripheral conversion of testosterone and other androgens to estrogens. Other mechanisms are probably at play as well.See 1 more doctor answer
Can the estrogen in birth control pills have caused my hyperthyroid to return to normal? I read estrogen blocks the production of thyroid hormone
Estrogen and thyroid: Unfortunately the two items can interact/interfere with each other and you need to get to your primary care doctor as soon as possible! It is likely that your doctor will refer you immediately to an Endocrinologist. Please let me know how things go.
What is the relationship between thyroid hormone and estrogen? Why there's amenorrhoea in hyperthyroidism and menorrhagia in hypothyroidism?
Don't: Estrogen levels should not be lowered. They are critical in a womans fertility, regular cyclicity and have many beneficial effects. If there is a specific condition that warrants suppression then there are many treatments, including lupron, (leuprolide) birth control pills and other methods. The question should be why do the estrogen levels need to be decreased?
Heavy periods: The symptoms of high estrogen or estrogen dominance are heavy periods with clots, irregular periods that are heavy, water retention, pms, large and tender breasts, growth of fibroids, high blood pressure, diabetes, migraines and severe cramps. These symptoms may also be from Progesterone deficiency.
Not really: You could check it but there is no way to interpret the results. It is very rare to need to check estrogen levels in a young woman.
Nothing: My guess is the hormones levels were just drawn at the early part of the cycle, which is exactly what you would expect to see at that time. If the hormones were drawn late in the cycle, the result would be the opposite. Probably does not need any treatment at all.
Not sure: Generally, nine days after an embryo transfer, you draw your blood for a HCG level. Most clinics do not measure estrogen. If the results are low, it is generally indicative that you may not be pregnant. At our clinic, even if the levels are low, we repeat them in 3-4 days, "just to be sure". Sometimes, but not often, low e2 or HCG levels can result in a good pregnancy. Good luck.
Nothing definitive: A few studies have been done which show influence in both directions: post-menopausal women who took vitamin B12 (and other) supplements showed increased estradiol levels. Women with surgical removal of uterus/ovaries were given estradiol and showed increased B12 levels! The exact connection is unclear. Eat a balanced diet including meat/dairy products; vegetarians may need B12 supplements.
Why do you ask: If you are having period problems (such as missing your periods) and your estrogen levels have been tested and are too low, you need to address the cause. Causes can include: being underweight, too much exercise, or an eating disorder or other medical problems. Your body is giving you a message, and you must listen to it. There are no foods or other ways to increase the levels.See 1 more doctor answer
