Hyperplastic Nodule Thyroid
What does a hyperplastic with mild atypia nodule and cystic hyperplastic nodule associated with oncocytic metaplasia mean, both are in thyroid.
I recently had a FNA of my thyroid nodule. The results showed "benign, hyperplastic nodule with extensive Hurthle cell metaplasia". Should I worry?
Needs surgery: see your doctor. You need a referral to a surgeon. Hurtle cell can be benign or malignant. It is impossible to tell whether it is benign or cancerous on a fine needle aspiration. You need surgery to remove that side of your thyroid in order to know100% if it is one or the other. ...Read more
3cm hyperechoic thyroid nodule with increased vascularity, normal TSH fnac- follicular cell with hyperplastic area. What it indicates?
Uncertain: The fna can only help if it shows cancer. But in your case it is ambiguous, so your doctor should guide you what to do next?...What did he/she suggest as the next step? Most doctors would next recommend either surgical excision or monitor closely for some time and see if it is growing in size in which case it has to be taken out. ...Read more

Throid nodules. Upper right lobe hot, lower right lobe cold 3.4cm. Does that mean I have hyper and hypo thyriodism at the same time?
No, the activity: of individual nodules on a thyroid scan may not, in and of themselves, imply hyper or hypothyroidism, which are diagnoses based on systemic symptoms and blood levels. Certainly, however, an autonomous hot nodule could result in hyperthyroidism. Cold nodules have a higher chance of malignancy(although still relatively low), and biopsy may be indicated. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Thyroid nodules: Not all thyroid nodules are cancer. In fact, most nodules found in the thyroid are not cancer, they are either hyperplastic nodules (goiter) or benign lesions (adenoma). Those types of nodules can be large, but they do not "become" cancer, they are benign. In order to know if it is benign or a thyroid cancer, the nodule has to be sampled by FNA or excision, and examined by pathologist ...Read more
I have bilateral partially cystic thyroid nodules.Biopsy done of the larger one, came back "follicular lesion of unknown origin" what does that mean?
Variable meaning: Follicular?patterned lesions of the thyroid are common; these include hyperplastic/adenomatoid nodules, follicular adenoma, follicular carcinoma and follicular variants of papillary carcinoma. Repeat biopsy with a sample sent for a genetic afirma assay may give additional useful information. In addition, discuss with your endocrinologist. ...Read more
Nodule 2cm found on neck. One biopsy said atypia cells and I was told I had cancer. Went to endo she said its benign with 2nd biopsy on thyroid. Now ?
FNA: Sounds like you had a fine needle aspirate of the thyroid. You may have gotten the diagnosis of a follicular lesion. It is difficult on a needle aspirate to differentiate a,follicular adenoma, from carcinoma, and from a hyperplastic nodule. The tissue diagnosis nay have been more specific . Get a second opinion and gave an expert pathologist review your slides and biopsies. ...Read more
Follow up: Pregnancy can increase the size of existing thyroid nodules or cause new nodules. These nodules are mostly hyperplastic changes, ie, not cancerous. Imaging (ultrasound) surveillance would probably be adequate. Fine needle aspiration may be performed on nodules larger than 5 mm. They can predispose you to have nodular goiter later in life. ...Read more
