Good sleep practices: Atarax/hydroxyzine is a prescription antihistamine/anti-allergy medication. Because it can be sedating, some people find it helpful for insomnia, at least in the short term. Many alternatives: There are many alternatives, but it depends on why you're looking for an alternative. Is Klonopin (clonazepam) not working? Perhaps the dose in wrong. Are you looking to get off of benzodiazepines (the drug class that Klonopin (clonazepam) is in) altogether? If so, then your doctor should slowly titrate you off the medication (10-25% weekly or biweekly, depending on how long you've been taking) while initiating another med ...Read more

Benadryl (diphenhydramine).....: is probably the most readily available sedating antihistamine. It is a common ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) preparations for sleep, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) PM -- the PM part is diphenhydramine, the generic name for Benadryl. Another one I like to use is hydroxyzine (also known as Vistaril or Atarax) but that is only available as a prescription, however its metabolite is Zyrtec, which is OTC. ...Read more

Reason to ask: Always ask the Dr to explain what they expect the Rx to do for you as well as possible side effects. It is not intended to relieve insomnia in most folk. And it is a common side effect. But your Dr might believe your insomnia is due to depression or anxiety which is the main uses. Discuss it all ASAP and if it doesn't make sense to you ask for a change. Best! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Neither best: Many drugs have sedation as one of many side effects, such as the two you mention. In fact, Restoril (temazepam) is an old brand of hydroxyzine I'd written for years ago whose use is implied by the name. Yet it is primarily an antihistamine. Better to ask for currently used drugs whose effects are more specific for insomnia. ...Read more
