Hydrocortisone (Definition)

Cortisone is a naturally produced hormone in the body, produced by the adrenal glands. It is often used as a potent medication for inflammatory disease. In serious cases, it is a "wonder" drug, and can be life saving. However, long and continuous use can cause many serious and uncomfortable side effects. Hydrocortisone is a topical skin variety and much less potent than cortisone.

Dermatologist prescribe for one week child 0.1%hydrocortisone cream , can we dilute this cream?

Dermatologist prescribe for one week child 0.1%hydrocortisone cream , can we dilute this cream?

Will it even work?: Hydrocortisone is the weakest of all topical corticosteroid agents. It is sold over-the-counter in concentrations 5 to 10 times the potency of the prescription given to your child. I have never heard of a potency so very weak & have to wonder if it will work at all. If you think it still too strong you should try alternative medications first. But your concern may be groundless. ...Read more

Way to prevent or heal skin thinning? My 7 weeks old baby was prescribed hydrocortisone 1% for a skin condition on her face. Is this irreversible?

Hydrocortisone: Personally I do not like to use steroids on a young infant's face unless absolutely necessary. The effects are not irreversible. Use warm water and aquaphor. In time the skin will replenish and become normal appearing again. ...Read more

It is okay to use hydrocortisone once a day for a month?

It is okay to use hydrocortisone once a day for a month?

Oral??: If you're taking Hydrocortisone orally, why? Depending on the dose, you can't just stop it in a month else you could develop an adrenal crisis. If it is in cream or ointment form, how extensively are you using it, how many times/day, locations of application? It is possible to suppress adrenal glands even with topical steroids depending on how much is absorbed. Please discuss with your doctor. ...Read more
