My dr prescribed 50 mg of losartan and 25 mg of hctz (hydrochlorothiazide). is this a normal combination?

Very normal: Sure is. Like peanut butter and jelly. Peas and carrots. Hugs and kisses. That combination is effective, safe, and used very commonly because the losartan helps cancel a troublesome side effect of hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) (potassium wasting) and hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) potentiates the effect of losartan. Your dr is on the ball. ...Read more

I am told that having hydrochlorothiazide in combination with ramipril for years together can cause loss of sodium and other problem in body.

I am told that having hydrochlorothiazide in combination with ramipril for years together can cause loss of sodium and other problem in body.

Diuretics and sodium: Using a diuretic, like hyrdochlorothiazide (hctz (hydrochlorothiazide)) can cause a drop in sodium (na) levels in your blood. Ramipril (r) has no effect on your na level, as its anti-hypertensive effect is based on its making your arteries more compliant which lowers blood pressure. If low na levels are a problem for you, ask your doctor if there are different options for your blood pressure control other than hctz (hydrochlorothiazide). ...Read more
