No: Though interactions were reported in patients taking these two agents, Humira (adalimumab) and niacin, the patients were taking multiple other medications. It was not shown to be an interaction between the Niacin and humira (adalimumab). To test it individually, the Niacin could simply be stopped for a month assuming the Niacin was being used to treat hyperlipidemia. Ask your doctor if it is safe to hold the niacin. ...Read more

Methotrexate cheaper: Generic Methotrexate is very inexpensive. If you get name brand pills it's more, but generic version of Arava (leflunomide) is more expensive than Methotrexate and Arava is the most expensive. In my experience, Methotrexate works better and has less frequent dosing (weekly instead of daily). I only use Leflunomide (arava) if Methotrexate can't be used for some reason. Humira (adalimumab) hurts: Humira (adalimumab) is a great drug in terms of its effectiveness for arthritis, uveitis, inflammatory bowel disease and other autoimmune but it hurts everyone who gets this medication. I have spoken to Humira (adalimumab) drug reps about this since i prescribe it to kids. There is something in the formulation that causes the stinging. Try warming med to body temp under your arm for 10 min before injecting. It helps some. ...Read more

Other choices: Some older drugs such as Plaquenil may help, especially with fatigue. There are also newer drugs that act via different mechanisms such as actemra (tocilizumab). I assume the diagnosis of RA is definite. If not, retest other possibilities. An exercise program may be very beneficial, especially if you start slowly and build up with hurting yourself.
