Why are Human Endogenous Retroviruses (HERV's) "activated" in SOME people, but not in others, when exposed to exogenous viruses? Genetic mutations?

HERV's evolutionary

Genetic
Endogenous retroviruses have made us evolve. They make up 8% of our DNA genome. These aren't of the same class as HIV (lentivirus) or HTLV (deltaretrovirus). Few are active & only w/growth & infection. Co-infection w/HIV can turn on HERV replication wh/allows our immune system ability recognize & kill HIV viruses w/HERV presenting-HIV infected cells leading to new therapies for HIV (vaccines!)

Is it true that human height based on how much growth hormone you secrete or genetics?

More genetics

Height
How tall you are is related to nutrition and genetics more than one hormone (growth hormone). It is not that the hormone does not help and is needed but it does not predetermine your size.

Is alzheimer's disease genetic?

It depends

Open-uri20130429-5302-yus4pl
In rare families, there is an abnormal gene that is transmitted to children and there is 50% probability that the children will eventually develop Alzheimer's disease. However, It is usually in families where several members develop Alzheimer's disease in early age. Otherwise, there is inheritance of the form of apolipoprotein that increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease earlier

Dr. Robert Kwok answered:

Is SLE really a genetic disease?

Somewhat genetic?

Systemic_lupus_erythematosus
SLE (lupus) is an auto-immune disorder in which a person's immune system is reacting strongly against parts of his own body. The inflammation from the immune system reaction leads to symptoms. It is believed to be partly genetic (some people may be genetically more likely to get SLE) and partly environmental (something happens in a person's life that sets off the auto-immune reaction).

Is brittle bone disease genetic?

Usually

Bone
Osteogenesis imperfecta is a disorder of brittle bones. There is an abnormality in collagen 1 function, and so you are not able to make bones or other connective tissue structures correctly. This is why people often have "blue sclera" because the collagen is abnormal. Most cases are genetic, but a new mutation (not inherited) can be seen (about 35%).

Can asthma be a genetic disease ?

Yes

Adult_asthma
Depending on which study is read, if one parent has asthma, there is a 25-40% chance that the children will have some form of it; if both parents have asthma, then there is a 60-80% chance that the children will have it. This suggests that there is a very strong Genetic component to asthma but it is not the only factor.

Is WPW syndrome a genetic disease?

Yes

Heart
While WPW syndrome is genetic, not every patient behaves or is treated the same way. A good percentage of the WPW population will not need any treatment as they do not have fast heart rates (arrhythmias). At the other end of the spectrum however, live patients with WPW who may need ablation or possibly an ICD. The proper course of action is determined by an electrophysiologist usually.
