Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more

Is a pap smear safe during pregnancy?

Is a pap smear safe during pregnancy?

Yes: The pap smear takes superficial cells from the outside of the cervix and first part of the canal. Sometimes, for various reasons, the cervical canal may bleed after the test has been done, but this bleeding does not mean that the pregnancy is threatened and does not by any means necessarily mean that there is a problem with your cervix.

Hello, My wife is 10 weeks pregnant with our first child and, at 8 weeks, she received a pap smear during her first pregnancy visit to her gynecologist. She received a call yesterday from the doctor saying her test came back abnormal and looks to be mild

Don't panic: Pap testing at the first prenatal visit is common. There are precise guidelines about how to manage positive results. The presence of abnormal cervical cells or HPV does not affect the outcome of the pregnancy. A test called a colposcopy may be needed; it is safe to perform during pregnancy. Often mild or minor cell changes can be monitored until after delivery, when they may return to normal.

I had an abnormal pap smear. Would an undetected pregnancy cause it? I have to have a colposcopy done and I nervous about the result.

Abnormal pap: Abnormal paps are caused by inflammation, viruses or aging not pregnancy. You should have a colonoscopy to determine the cause of the abnormal pap and plan appropriate treatment.

Can a pap smear detect a pregnancy?

Pap smear: No. Pap smear is a screening exam to detect early stage of cervical cancer. It will not tell if it is pregnant or not.

Can you get abnormal pap smear due to pregnancy?

Can you get abnormal pap smear due to pregnancy?

Sometimes...: During pregnancy there can be inflammation which can be interpreted as an abnormality by the pathologist. Sometimes women who carry the hpv virus can express it during pregnancy due to changes in immune response, and an abnormal pap smear can show up. It may resolve after delivery, but may need investigation during pregnancy with colposcopy and/or biopsy.

Have had dysplasia in the past, had cells removed. Waiting for reg pap smear before trying to get pregnant again. Would dysplasia affect pregnancy?

Not at all: If you feel comfortable waiting until a normal pap result is returned before getting pregnant that is fine, but dysplasia should not affect any pregnancy. Women who are found to have dysplasia while pregnant are usually just followed closely and any treatment is delayed until after the six week postpartum visit.

At my 6week of pregnancy check up doctor did the usual pap smear and it came back high grade.. Never had an abnormal one before. Is this normal after birth?

At my 6week of pregnancy check up doctor did the usual pap smear and it came back high grade.. Never had an abnormal one before. Is this normal after birth?

Not expected: Having an abnormal pap result after giving birth is not normal. Please follow-up with your gyn. It should either be repeated or you might be aked to undergo colposcopy wherein biopsies are obtained from your cervix which will give a more accurate result.

I got a pap smear & tested for std's & everything came out good I don't have anything my pregnancy test is negative but I still have red discharge why?

I got a pap smear & tested for std's & everything came out good I don't have anything my pregnancy test is negative but I still have red discharge why?

Other things: While it is great to know that this is all okay, many other things can cause abnormal bleeding including cervical irritation, polyps, medications, and illnesses such as thyroid disease and diabetes. See your gynecologist and discuss the problem. A good history and physical exam can guide the diagnostic testing to give you an answer. Hope this helps.

Yes: Pap smears can traumatize the cervix sufficiently to cause slight bleeding for a couple of days. Cramping is also common, and every pregnancy is different. It is also possible that this represents early signs of a miscarriage but this seems less likely.

The doc gave me a pap smear and told me that my cervix and uterus weren't soft enough to determine pregnancy. 3 preg. Tests say that I am. Could I be?

The doc gave me a pap smear and told me that my cervix and uterus weren't soft enough to determine pregnancy. 3 preg. Tests say that I am. Could I be?

Makes no sense: Pregnancy can not be determined by the softness of the cervix in any reliable way. A simple urine pregnancy test can be done to answer the question. If you have three positive pregnancy tests then you are pregnant. Clarify what your doctor meant because this does not seem like a very confusing situation.
