The : The most common way to "roll" or sprain your ankle is when the ankle (and attached foot) rolls inward toward the other foot. This puts the outside part of the foot on stretch or tension and may injure the outside or lateral ligaments of the ankle. Additionally, on the outside top portion of the leg is a nerve that gives sensation to much of the top of the foot (the superficial peroneal nerve). It's actually just under the skin at this level. Just as the previous responder stated, this nerve was almost assuredly stretched at the time of your injury, causing a traction injury to the nerve. It may take weeks for this to fully recover (or in rare cases, it doesn't recover). Anti inflammatory medications and sometimes other medications more specifically shown to help with nerve related pain may be indicated. If you are not improving, consider seeing a sports medicine physician or an orthopaedic surgeon for further treatment. Good luck! ...Read more
