A filling for a small cavity keeps falling out. This is the 5th time I will have to get it fixed in 1 1/2 years. Should I find a new dentist?

Depends: Depends on where the cavity is. If it was on the edge of a front tooth/incisor, those can have a tendency to chip off if you are not careful about biting into hard food. If its in the back of your mouth, with the bonding process being very technique sensitive, if any saliva hits the tooth in the middle of bonding, that can compromise the bond and make it more likely to fall out. ...Read more

Can a new dentist be untruthful to you when showing you your dental xrays, saying that you have 10 small cavities, when 6 months ago only had one.

Can a new dentist be untruthful to you when showing you your dental xrays, saying that you have 10 small cavities, when 6 months ago only had one.

Early Detection: New technology enables dentists to detect decay earlier then in the past. It is possible that the dentist with the newer equipment is actually going to preserve more tooth structure by early intervention (smaller hole). Laser detection (diagnadent) and sopra fluoresence are some of the newest tools I have in my practice for early intervention. If very early, Fluoride mineralization is best. ...Read more

How would a dentist fill in a small cavity? Can he just laser away instead of drill?

How would a dentist fill in a small cavity? Can he just laser away instead of drill?

Yes, possibly.: Laser dentistry is becoming more common and some can remove a cavity instead of using a drill. Sometimes you don't even need anesthetic (shots). The cavity is then filled (restored) with whatever material you and your dentist decide is best. If you are really interested in laser dentistry I would search out a dentist that has a hard tissue laser. ...Read more

My dentist said I have a small hole in my tooth and I should put some toothpaste on it each night. Is there any other way to help seal up the cavity?

My dentist said I have a small hole in my tooth and I should put some toothpaste on it each night. Is there any other way to help seal up the cavity?

Hole? Cavity?: While there are some toothpastes that can remineralize decalcified enamel, merely applying normal tooth paste will do nothing. I'm not sure which one your dentist recommended or is referring to. Personally, if I had a suspicious lesion in my own tooth, I would want a dental sealant, flowable composite or a small bonded filling. You might want to get more clarification regarding treatment choices. ...Read more

To root canal or not: In most cases a cavity under the gum line can be salvageable. Depending on how deep the cavity may go down the root under the gum line a root canal can be done. The only question will be if your dentist can be able to fit a crown on the tooth. Many dentist may suggest having a extra procedure done called "crown lengthening " which is done by a periodontist. ...Read more

When must onego to the dentist for a cavity?

When must onego to the dentist for a cavity?

As soon as possible: A cavity is bacteria that has gotten into a weakened part of enamel. Under the enamel is a softer layer of tooth called dentin. Once a cavity gets into the dentin it progresses very fast. If a cavity doesn't get taken care of, it will just get deeper and larger until it reaches the nerve and will cause the tooth to die, cause pain and swelling. Fixing it will then require a root canal or extrac. ...Read more

How do you tell if you have cavities without going to a dentist?

How do you tell if you have cavities without going to a dentist?

Simple answer: Typically cavities are not going to be able to be detected without going to a dentist. Most cavities are asymtomatic and won't cause pain until they get large. Even your dentist would need x-rays to see cavities between the teeth, they aren't seen with the naked eye. ...Read more
