Lumbar Sprain/Strain: Back pain from an injury like this is not uncommon. Often it is treated by a variety of medications including anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants. This is in addition to therapy provided by a chiropractor, physical therapist, sometimes occupational therapist, and possibly even an orthopedic surgeon. At this point, a x-ray of your back and/or an MRI may be appropriate. ...Read more

She was changing the oil in her dirt bike and her finger got stuck in it, what should I do to help her?

She was changing the oil in her dirt bike and her finger got stuck in it, what should I do to help her?

If finger still: Stuck, try ice to decrease the swelling in her finger and help get unstuck. If unstick, experience a puncture wound and it's been more than five years since last tetanus shot — or can't remember when you had your last tetanus shot — it's best to get the booster shot. ...Read more

Could have an injury: Hopefully, your injury is a simple strain and bruise but more serious injuries need be excluded. You should see a physician for an exam and probably an x-ray to check for a fracture of your knee cap. You may need an MRI to look for torn ligaments or cartilage. You should not ignore ongoing symptoms as some injuries require surgical repair to have the best outcome. ...Read more

More evaluation: If the only injuries 10 yrs ago were burns & sprain, then highly unlikely that injury is the cause. Would recommend that you get more evaluation to determine cause of your symptoms ...Read more

Could I have had a broken scaphoid for over a year? I have had a lot of pain in my wrist since i crashed on a dirt bike almost a year ago. I have not had it looked at by a doctor or anything. Is it possible it could have been broken this whole time? Could

There : There are 2 injuries that can destroy the wrist. One is a scaphoid fracture. The other is a scapholunate ligament tear. Your story is a common one for scaphoid fractures. They often occur in young men doing high energy sports, such as skateboarding, snowboarding, and dirt biking. Many patients do not seek care initially or have normal x-rays on the day of injury. The wrist starts to feel better, so they don't feel it is important to follow-up. However, the scaphoid is notoriously difficult to heal. Evidence suggests that immobilizing the fracture within the first 4 weeks after injury is imperative for healing. The other possibility is disrupting the ligament between the scaphoid and lunate. These can also be difficult to diagnose, even with stress views of the wrist which attempt to spread the 2 bones apart. Both of these injuries can destabilize the wrist and cause early onset arthritis (termed snac or slac wrist). It is important to see a hand surgeon and get appropriate x-rays. I like to get the stress views at the initial visit to see if there is a ligament injury. Sometimes MRI will be helpful, particularly in deciding if there is a good blood supply to the scaphoid or if part of it is "dead, " called avascular necrosis. ...Read more

I crashed on my dirt bike yesterday and I think my helmet or shoulder jammed into my jaw. My gland under my jaw is swollen now on my right side.

I crashed on my dirt bike yesterday and I think my helmet or shoulder jammed into my jaw. My gland under my jaw is swollen now on my right side.

Go to the ER: Without seeing you I can’t tell whether you're referring to simple soft tissue injury or something more serious but there are enough serious possibilities from what you describe that I wouldn't wait around any longer. You could have a jaw fracture, salivary gland injury, and/or even infection which if combined with the other injuries or under your tongue could be a disaster. Go to the ER now! ...Read more

Bruised knee cap: Direct fall onto knee without fracture can cause a painful swelling (bursitis) on the knee this usually will subside in 1-2 weeks with initial icing followed by heat and gradual range of motion exercises . A fall can also bruise the cartilage between the knee cap and the femur (post traumatic chondromalacia). If pain persists see an orthopedist or physical therapist for evaluation ...Read more
