With an ankle sprain depending on what ligaments and how bad they were involved i would say at least 3 weeks of offloading/protected weight-bearing would be appropriate. Not really: An acl brace has not been shown to prevent any rotation in the knee. It really only prevents stress on the mcl or lcl ligaments. A patient without an acl can still injury the meniscus and cartilage while wearing a brace. Furthermore, many braces inhibit the quad muscles, further worsening some symptoms. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is wearing the aircast inflatable stirrup ankle brace suitable for posterior tibial tendonitis? How long should this be worn?
Yes: In most cases the aircast brace is appropriate tx for post tib tendonitis. Occasionally a brace that locks the heal itself might be necessary. With the brace, nsaid's, and some rest mild tendonitis should be better in about 3 weeks. Occasionally more aggressive tx is needed with perhaps a cortizone (hydrocortisone) injection or even surgery if the above and pt doesn't help. Good luck! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

6-12 weeks or more: Generally, bones heal in about 6-8 weeks. Depending on the severity of your ankle fracture (did it involve the fibula and the tibia or just the fibula?), and depending on the need for surgery, you may have a fair amount of swelling in the ankle, which could preclude wearing heals for much longer than 6-8 weeks. Swelling can take up to a year to improve, and may never fully resolve. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I am in an air cast for an ankle sprain. All its doing is causing swelling and pain. Could I juat wear and ankle brace instead?
Possibly: If it is just an ankle sprain, and definitely not a fracture immobilization is not required definitively. The main purpose would be to provide support and aid in your function. So if the air cast is not helping, you could certainly try it without anything or go to a soft brace. Check with your doctor first as I don't know the specifics of the injury, but you don't have to immobilize a sprain. ...Read more

How tight?: If the brace is not tight so as to interfere with venous return, it would not add to the risk of blood clots. If the brace has metal in it you may have to go through extra-screening at the airport. If it not medically indicated you may wish to leave it home.
