How To Tell If Your Child Has Too Much Focalin
Sometimes: Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) is in the the stimulant family, and insomnia is a common side effect of all stimulants. However, children with adhd, even unmedicated, have a fairly high rate of sleeping problems. Trying to take the medication as early in the day as feasible may help in minimizing this side effect. ...Read more
My child has a bad attitude since starting focalin (dexmethylphenidate) xr; have others had this problem?
Common: Since your child is having irritability being on focalin, (dexmethylphenidate) be sure she isn't having caffeine, chocolate, or decongestants. If she is, try discontinuing them. If older, no energy drinks. Another reason for irritability on stimulants is comorbid depression or anxiety. Please discuss with prescribing physician. If none of these are present your doctor may make alterations in the treatment regimen. ...Read more
My child crashes off her focalin (dexmethylphenidate) X-ray 30 mg and it is disruptive to family. She is totally out of control. Any suggestions?
Wait about 10 hours: After your last dose for it to wear off. Stimulants do not " build up" or stay in the bloodstream at a steady state. Any symptoms you have that are side-effects of Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) will be gone completely after 24 hours after your last dose. If your symptoms persist longer than that, they are not related to Focalin (dexmethylphenidate). ...Read more

Will a lab be able to tell the difference between concerta and focalin (dexmethylphenidate) XR in a urine sample?
Please tell me, could a lab tell the difference between concerta and focalin (dexmethylphenidate) XR in a urine sample?
Depends on tests:
Kenneth G answered 8 months ago
It all depends on the test they use. With a basic screen, amphetamine like drugs will look like the same things. If they do more sophisticated analysis, that's not the case. Now, the difference between Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) and Concerta is minimal. They are the same molecule, but Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) is the right-handed "dextro" isomer of methylphenidate vs Concerta which is a "racemic" mixture of left and right handed isomers. The dextro is considered to be the most active. If you're on Concerta, the urinary metabolite is d, l ritalinic acid. With focalin, (dexmethylphenidate) just d-ritalinic acid. ...Read more
Docs, could a lab tell the difference between concerta and focalin (dexmethylphenidate) XR in a urine sample?
No: To detect d, l-methylphenidate (Concerta) or d-methylphenidate (Focalin) a quantitative LC-MS/MS test and critical-frozen specimen are required. Urine should be collected within 8 hours of dosing, and blood (serum/plasma) within 4 hours of dosing. These tests do not distinguish between d- and l- isomers of methylphenidate. ...Read more

The difference: Adderall contains 75% of the effective (dextro) isomers of amphetamine, while Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) is dextro-methylphenidate (only the right-handed, or active molecule of adderall). Adderall is a mixture of amphetamine salts, 3-1 effective to non-effective levo (or left-handed molecules). Dextroamphetamine contains only the effective stereoisomer of amphetamine, and has fewer side effects. ...Read more

Methylphenidate: (original trade name ritalin) is a mixture of d- and l-methylphenidate. The d- and i- are enantiomers or molecules that are mirror images of each other. Focalin is d- or dexmethylphenidate which is more potent than the l-methylphenidate. Focalin xr is extended release to last longer. Side effects are similar and some people respond better to one versus the other. Both are good options for adhd. ...Read more

About 24 hours: To some degree depends upon the dose you were taking it in our you were dividing it up for the day, but in general if you were taking a once a day dose then it would be expected that would be out of your system in about 24hr according to the data on the Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) xr website. Since it is a medication that is extended release with the second release occurring about 4 to 6 hours afterwords, it's very difficult to speak in terms of elimination half-life per se. The curve on the website shows however that after a single dose of Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) exr it is out of the system at 24 hours. ...Read more
Does focalin (dexmethylphenidate) work better or worse or differently than the other add drugs on kids?
Same: As the drs. Said, it's the right half of the methylphenidate molecule & the dose is 1/2 that of ritalin. Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) xr's onset is 30 minutes & it lasts ~ 10 hours.
