Reducing gabapentin: This medicine can cause weight gain, although it is relatively unusual. It is an unusual medicine for headache prevention. If you want to stop using it, discuss the matter with the prescriber first. They might ask you to reduce your dose to 300 mg three times a day for a week, then 300 mg twice a day for a week, then 300 mg once a day for a week. Then stop. ...Read more

How can Neurontin (gabapentin) work on the nerves to stop pain?

How can Neurontin (gabapentin) work on the nerves to stop pain?

Blocks glutamate: The exact mechanism is not fully understood. Neurontin (gabapentin) may work by binding to certain sites on nerve cells in order to block the release of glutamate. Glutamate in turn causes nerve cells to be abnormally excited and therefore accentuate pain. Does that help? ...Read more

I have been taking gabapentin to sleep for about 3 months. It has been 8 days since I have took any. When does withdraws like anxiety stop?

Soon: Gabapentin is not intended as a sleep aid, it is a neurologic medication used for nerve pain and neurologic disorders. Any drugs that affect the brain should be weaned slowly, to minimize side effects such as yours. However if it has been 8 days, your side effects should be nearing their endpoint. Please check with your doc before just stopping this drug. ...Read more

My rheumatologist instructed me to just stop taking my Neurontin (gabapentin) I started on 300 and worked my way to 1800 over about 1.5 months is that good advice?

Taper gradually: Neurontin (generic name gabapentin) is actually an anti seizure medication that is used for pain syndromes, neuropathy, among other off-label uses. Been on 100mg gabapentin for a week. Can I stop cold turkey? Trail for anxiety but making me feel lousy

Ask: Your doc to taper you off. This medication is not indicated for anxiety. In fact, I have to be honest: many in the psychiatric field wonder what this medication is good for. Ssri's like the Celexa (citalopram) are top shelf anxiety treatment but, as opposed to use for depression, the dosages usually need to be more robust. Take care. ...Read more

Is there a chance that gabapentin will stop working for my trigem neuralgia. It takes half the pain away but am scared will stop working as I've heard.

Is there a chance that gabapentin will stop working for my trigem neuralgia. It takes half the pain away but am scared will stop working as I've heard.

Possibly: Sometimes, the symptoms go away on their own, and sometimes, Gabapentin and other drugs stop working. If you have had pain for more than a year, and multiple medicines have failed, or if you can not tolerate the medication side effects, surgery is appropriate. I do a "keyhole microvascular decompression" which allows most of my patinets to go home the day after surgery, with 90+% cure rate. ...Read more

Yes, and no: Yes, absolutely don't consume alcohol (like a shot of vodka, glass of wine, can of beer) with gabapentin. Together they synergistically cause CNS depression. Alcohol is known to cause vasodilatation as well, so combining it with your blood pressure meds could be dangerous. That said, a couple of drops of ethanol won't harm you. What else is in the tincture? Those contents may be more worrisome. ...Read more
