See your doctor.: It is not normal to have blood in your saliva or to have the new onset of right-sided chest pain despite presumed treatment for your chronic Gerd. Because of the acute change in symptoms, I would see your doctor or a gastroenterologist as soon as you can. I would see them soon, but in the meantime I would add in in chewable antacids such as Tums (calcium carbonate). Good luck. ...Read more

Burning in throat & feels like something is there when I swallow & bitter taste in mouth. Has lasted for 4 days. Can acid reflux to last this long? N

Maybe, but...: Could also be some other cause for the symptoms. One's doctor can check. Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). ...Read more

GERD or acid reflux? I have been waking up with burning in throat and sour taste in mouth for days. All heart tests are ok.

Acid Reflux: Your symptoms are typical for acid reflux. When lying horizontal, the reflux worsens. Try to not eat anything within 2 hours of retiring. Sometimes elevating the head of the bed by propping up the front legs with blocks can help. Anti acids like Mylanta can provide some relief as can over the counter medications like Nexium (esomeprazole) and Prilosec. If the symptoms persist, see your doctor. ...Read more

Does fermented food leads to acid reflux and sore throat?

Does fermented food leads to acid reflux and sore throat?

No: Acid reflux is physiologic. In other words, it's normal. However, it becomes pathologic when it bothers you. Fermented food doesn't cause acid reflux any more than non-fermented food. However, "bad" acid reflux allows acid to get high enough back up esophagus to cause sore throat. Antacids (calcium carbonate), H2 blockers & proton pump inhibitors help. Stay upright after small meals. ...Read more

I do not have acid reflux, do not have a sore throat, and I am not sick. So what would cause you throat to feel like it wants to close?

"Silent reflux": You don't have to have heartburn or the sense of stuff coming up to have "reflux". Most people with reflux don't have heartburn. The only symptom may be hoarseness, asthma, swallowing difficulty or the feeling like your throat will close. There is a muscle in the lower neck that encircles the upper food tube that hates stomach juice and acid. When it comes into contact with it it spasms. ...Read more

How can I know if my sore throat is due to an acid reflux attack in my sleep, or due to something else? I want to make sure my prilosec is working

See MD if continues: Acid reflux occurs more often if one lies down too soon after eating. Need to wait 2 hours. U can also take a Tum. Note that Prilosec does tend to make one Magnesium depleted. Good to take Mg Oxide (~250mgs) a few times a week. If you had litmus paper you could measure pH (acid) of saliva in AM. At any rate a viral sore throat lasts few days. Severe achy pain in my trachea area & trouble swallowing (feels like I've been strangled. Hard!) after 2 days of acid reflux and a slight sore throat?

Probably is LPR: Exposure of the vocal cords to stomach acid ; pepsin will result in inflammation of the vocal cords (as is also often seen with acid regurgitation). Acute laryngitis may result, but watch out for chronic hoarseness, throat clearing, airway spasms, bronchitis, an asthma-type presentation, and even a higher risk of throat cancer. Impedance ph testing with a symptom diary can best characterize this. ...Read more

Sore throat: A persistent sore throat could be a sign of cancer. Usually throats go away within a few weeks. If soreness persists for 4 weeks or more and especially if it is only on one side then cancer should be suspected. Associated ear pain is also highly suspicious for cancer. If your sore throat is due to acid reflux then it should go away with proper meds. If not get re-checked or seek a second opinion ...Read more

I sometimes feel a lump like a plum stuck between by brest cavity. Is this due to acid reflux? Also a sore throat

Sure, see GI doctor: Difficulty swallowing ("dysphagia") can be distinguished as a "transfer" problem (difficulty moving food from mouth to top of esophagus), "transit" problem (difficulty moving food down the esophagus), "spasm", gerd (due to sphincter problems), or obstructive (webs, rings, strictures, ulcer, tumor). Can acid reflux cause a sore throat? I have heartburn mostly at night and have a slight soreness in my throat most of the time.

Acid: Acid reflux can most definitely cause a sore throat. If you are routinely experiencing symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (gerd) such as:
- heartburn
- sore throat
- "lump in the throat" sensation or difficulty swallowing
- acidic or sour taste in your mouth
- dry cough
- hoarseness
- regurgitation (wet burps)

it is important to discuss these symptoms with your doctor. There are many antacid and acid blocker medications that can help alleviate your symptoms.
