Blood Thinners (Definition)

Agents which slow ;/or break down blood clot formation in up to 3 different ways (they do not decrease blood viscosity; thickness.) (1) some inhibit platelet function (e.g. Aspirin, clopidogrel, etc.). (2) others interfere with some of the clot forming proteins (warfarin, dabigatran, rivaroxaban, etc.), (3) others stimulate the blood clot destruction ...Read more

Dr say 5-10% chance of brain bleed from blood thinner meds is high risk? Mom has blood clots from fall in brain and DVT 1 dr says meds, 1, 1 not sure

Filter: It does appear that anticoagulant therapy would be risky in this situation. An alternative is to insert an IVC filter to prevent the blood clot from traveling from the leg to the lungs. Of course the attending physicians, who know all the findings, are best qualified to give advice in this case. ...Read more

Stop bleeding tongue. On blood thinners?

See your doc: See your doc or nurse that manages your blood thinners. A tongue will stop bleeding on its own usually. Your blood may be too thin and can be dangerous.

If I have a green screen inserted do I still have to take blood thinners? I was taken off thinners cause my lungs were bleeding months ago

If I have a green screen inserted do I still have to take blood thinners? I was taken off thinners cause my lungs were bleeding months ago

No that's its purpose: A greenfield filter is a screen placed in the inferior vena cava, the main vein returning blood to the right side of the heart. It is used in patients who are particularly vulnerable to pulmonary embolism, such as those diagnosed with deep venous thrombosis who, like you, cant be anticoagulated, to prevent venous emboli (clots) from entering the pulmonary circulation. ...Read more

If "blood thinners" are actually anticoagulants why can they cause easy under-the-skin bleeding with or without a bump or injury? More = worse for me

If "blood thinners" are actually anticoagulants why can they cause easy under-the-skin bleeding with or without a bump or injury? More = worse for me

Lack of clotting: There three mechanisms to control bleeding into the tissue from injury, 1. contraction of blood vessels, 2 Platelet aggregation to form a plug at the site of injury to the vessel, 3. Blood clot formation. If any one these is less than normal bleeding occurs in the tissue. Anti-coagulants impair blood clotting and a side effect is bleeding in the tissue, or easy bruising. ...Read more

Mother in law has atrial fibrillation but cannot handle blood thinners (they cause her bleeding issues). What else can treat Atrial fib besides blood thinners?

Prevention/treatment: Blood thinners are used mainly for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. There are numerous proposed personal scores/scales based on which they are recommended. The bleeding risk is usually the limiting factor in the use of blood thinners.
Atrial fibrillation treatment is a different topic and it involves mainly controlling the heart rate/ heart rhythm. ...Read more

Mom fell caused brain bleed 2+ months ago. Now has DVT distal peroneal. Treatment options? Blood thinners cause more brain bleeding? Mom is 79 yrs

IVC filter? I don't: Know if ur mom is prone to falling & brain bleeds; if so, anticoagulants (blood thinners) r not a good idea - it increases the risk of a fatal brain bleed shd she fall again in the future. A better option may be an IVC filter (Greenfield filter) which will trap DVTs & keep it from getting to the lungs; however it tends to cause swelling in the legs (side effect may be wrse than cure). I had a pulmonary embolism 4 months ago, they stop the blood thinner, it this mean I can have the risk to have a heart attack???

More info needed: Stopping blood thinners 4months after pulmonary embolism (PE)does not necessarily increase risk for heart attack. My concern would be the risk for another PE. Without knowing the details of your condition and treatment, we can not fully understand the risks in your situation. Not coumadin (warfarin): I presume you're NOT taking coumadin/warfarin which is absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy. I presume you must be on a low molecular weight heparin? It should be stopped as soon as labor begins. It will wear off in 8-12 hours and and can be reversed if necessary. ...Read more

What is the definition or description of: blood thinner?

Prevents clots: Blood thinners are any medications that inhibit steps in the pathway that leads to clotting. Aspirin and plavix, (clopidogrel) for example, inhibit platelet cells in the bloodstream from clumping together. Coumadin (warfarin) thins the blood by inhibiting the proteins in the blood that lead to deposition of fibrin, which makes up the bulk of clot material. ...Read more
