R.I.C.E.: For a mild ankle sprain that you are able to place weight on without significant pain you can self treat yourself with r.I.C.E. - rest, ice, compression, and elevation. If you are unable to put weight on your ankle or your pain has not improved after a week or so of rice, then you should seek medical attention with an orthopedist or a sports medicine specialist. To be serious, dr. Sung's advice to be careful on stairs is very important, but sometimes a simple mis-step is enough to twist/sprain/break your ankle. Only an x-ray can determine if you have a break though. Ice, rest, elevation, and if you're not much better in 24 hours, go see a podiatrist or orthopedist. Read more

Ankles: I will assume you were evaluated to ensure there are no fractures. Use rice to start - rest, ice compression and elevation. When it doesn't hurt to move, start with making the alphabet with ankle motion. Once walking isn't painful you can progress to gentle toe raises, then work on a wobble board for proprioception and strength. Use a compression wrap during this time to prevent edema. I'd google for proprioception exercises. They are balance type exercises and will help more than anything for this type of injury. Strengthening and stretching will help as well.
However, once the ligaments are sprained, they tend to heal in a stretched out position, and you are at risk for recurrent sprains. Read more
