R.I.C.E.: The first step to treating a sprained ankle is to decrease the inflammation (rest, ice- 15 mins on/off), compression, elevation). Avoid painful movements/activities. Brief course of anti- inflammatories ok. Arnica may be useful, not fda approved, so take at your own risk. After ankle sprain, risk of re-sprain is very high without proprioceptive retraining- ask your doctor for physical therapy! Read more

Ankles: I will assume you were evaluated to ensure there are no fractures. Use rice to start - rest, ice compression and elevation. When it doesn't hurt to move, start with making the alphabet with ankle motion. Once walking isn't painful you can progress to gentle toe raises, then work on a wobble board for proprioception and strength. Use a compression wrap during this time to prevent edema. Read more

Proprioception: I'd google for proprioception exercises. They are balance type exercises and will help more than anything for this type of injury. Strengthening and stretching will help as well.
