Both: More fiber-containing foods is largely preventive. Safest bulking agents, i.e. psyllium may help add water to stool & works in 12-72 hours. Lubricants/mineral oil makes the stool more slippery & works in 6-8 hrs. Hydrating agents (MOM, epsom salts) concentrate more water within stool & works in 30 min-6 hrs. Constipation: Constipation becomes more of an issue as we grow older. If a high fiber diet, plenty of water and avoidance of too much dairy( they harder the stool) doesnt keep tou regular, then it's much better to take a daily laxative than to strain or not go for days. Many ideas...: Eliminate all white flour and dairy from your diet. Assess if any of your chronic medications cause constipation. Double your current daily fluid intake. Soak prunes in water, overnight. In the morning, drink the water and eat the prunes. Soak in a warm, soapy bath. Add polyethylene glycol (aka Miralax) as per over the counter directions.
