How To Reduce Swollen Ankles Without Using Diuretics
By strict definition, a diuretic is any medicine causing increased urination. More practically, a diuretic is a medicine causing the kidney to secrete excess fluid by blocking the re-absorption of either water itself or electrolytes like sodium (primarily), potassium, chloride and bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate). These medicines are effective treatments for many disorders including ...Read more
I'm pregnant and my feet are swollen other than elevating my feet and not eating salt what else can I do to reduce the swelling ?
Wrong treatment.: I would not advise using diuretics for facial swelling as (1) probably would not work, (2) you'd likely become dehydrated trying to make them work and (3) fluid accumulation would not be the cause of this facial swelling. Allergy causes facial swelling via inflammation, not fluid accumulation like you'd see in heart failure or kidney disease. ...Read more

Compression: Sclerotherapy works by pushing the blood out of the spider veins and the injected solution then irritates the vein wall so that it sticks together and then dissolves. The purpose of the compression is twofold-keep the solution adherent to the vein and help reduce bruising. I usually recommend 48 hours of compression and i supply the ace bandages. Compression hose can be purchased in my office. ...Read moreSee 5 more doctor answers

Treat the cause: At 33 you should not have signifiant leg swelling unless you have serious medical problem. The most common one at your age would be obesity. If that is the case, lose weight and exorcise. If it is something else like CHF or kidney failure, those need to be managed medically. Compression stockings treat the symptom, not the cause. ...Read more
