Dr. Robert Leland answered:

Anyone ever have footdrop fixed?

Tendon transfers

Braces
Tendon transfer surgeries are an option to restore dorsiflexion in appropriate patients who are not tolerating brace wear. This can provide a very good outcome. Discuss options with an Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle specialist

Hemiarthroplasty - combined with footdrop. anyone experienced this?

May be nerve damage

Electromyography
Even the most carefully done orthopedic procedure can result in nerve impingement, and if the sciatic nerve is impinged a foot drop can result. A neurological evaluation (possibly including an nerve conduction study or electromyography) can help determine if this is the case, and guide further treatment.

Dr. Robert Leland answered:

What is new for people with footdrop?

Muscle stim brace

Ankle
dropfoot has various causes but results from the muscles that dorsiflex the ankle (primarily tibialis anterior) not functioning. This usually is caused by a nerve dysfuntion. In some cases it is reversible if the nerve can recover. Therapy, brace and surgery (tendon transfers) options exist. While most treatments aren't "new" a newer muscle stimulator can be used instead of a brace in some patient

Anyone ever have footdrop after delivery?

Yes

Leg
That can happen from excessive pressure on outside of the leg, compressing one of the nerves to the foot. This can be from the lateral leg resting on stirrups or even from the pressure of your own hands holding your leg while pushing. Most nerve injuries resolve on their own, but you should ask your OB to refer you to a Neurologist for evaluation and perhaps physical therapy.

Dr. Payam Rafat answered:

Do you know anything about dropfoot/footdrop?

Nerve involvement.

Open-uri20140323-8127-3h5ue8
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Surgical intervention may be of benefit in cases of spinal disc herniation. In case of trauma, others may need repair or grafting of the nerve. For some the WalkAide system, which is a functional electrical stimulation device, can be helpful. Others may benefit with a drop foot brace. Get evaluated and get the proper referrals.
