Bunion: Studies have shown orthotics do not prevent bunions. Custom inserts help restrict excessive motion or off load painful areas of the foot. They do not prevent bunions from growing. Sorry. Unlikely: 'splints' for hallux vagus deformity and bunions have little effect on natural history or progression . The deformity gradually progresses over time due to wear and tear. The best you can do is slow down the progression. Good shoes and supports that will improve foot function are the best treatment.
