How To Keep Sperm Alive For Artificial Insemination
What is artificial insemination, how much is it successful and how much time a frozen sperm can be alive?
IUI: Nowadays artificial insemination isuallyrefers to intrauterine insemination. This is where the sperm specimen is washed then placed into a catheter and this catheter is carefully placed at the very top of the uterus where approximately a half a cc of the sperm and culture media combination is deposited. Pregnancy rate if all is as normal as can be ranges between 15 to 20% per attempt. Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

In artificial insemination, how long will the sperms stay alive in the collection condom in room temperature?
If we collect sperms in a "flavored"or"lubricated"condom and use them during 20 minutes for artificial insemination will they still be alive and useful?
Condom and sperm: Collection of semen samples in a flavored or lubricated condom may harm the sperm and it's ability to be processed for artificial insemination. There are condoms made specifically for collection of semen samples that is to be processed for insemination and other assisted reproductive techniques. You need to ask your gynecologist or fertility specialist if this is the only way to collect a specimen. Read more

I'm going in for artificial insemination on mon morning. My husband and I had sex on sat night. Will his sperm be of a good quality to impregnate me?
There is no: Way I can tell you about your husband's sperm without doing a semen analysis. If you're asking whether a day and a half after sex is an adequate length of time, you'd be better off waiting at least 48 hr if you're planning on using a fresh sample. To an extent, it depends upon his fertiity numbers. With a frozen sample, obviously it doesn't matter. Check w/your doctor before possibly wasting $. Read more
I did artificial insemination and used a 2 inch syringe with donor sperm. Did I decrease my chances of success since I didn't use a "4-7" inch syringe?
Can viable sperm be extrcted from a 62 year old man who had a vasectomy 15 years ago? I had a vasectomy over 15 years ago. Can I still produce viable sperm, and have it extracted to be used for artificial insemination?
Vasectomy: Vasectomy reversals 15 years after vasectomy are rarely successful. Sperm can be harvested from your epididymis or testicle. There are different methods ranging from aspiration to extraction under the microscope. I would make an appointment with a urologist who specializes in infertility. Read more

Rare but possible: If there's signs of a male bacterial infection, with infection-fighting white blood cells in the sperm (pyospermia) we would not use that specimen for an intrauterine insemination or IUI as we might spread infection to the uterus or tubes. Viral infections like hepatitis b, hep. C, and HIV can be transmitted by sperm, so sperm donors are tested. Washing the sperm for IUI doesn't remove all virus. Read more
No: The couple's chance of having an ss child is 25%. With artificial insemination, we can't select the sperm with the normal gene (a) to use for egg fertilixzation. There are 2 options to prevent ss child: either do in vitro fertilization (ivf) with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (pgd) and use the embryos that are not ss or get pregnant and do cvs at around 10 weeks and if is ss do abortion. Do you mean ICSI?: Icsi (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) injects a single sperm into each egg; with conventional in vitro fertilization (ivf) we just mix eggs and sperm in the lab and let natural fertilization occur. 3 reasons for icsi 1. Abnormal sperm tests pre-treatment/ on day of egg retrieval 2. Surgically retrieved sperm 3. Reduce errors in pgd testing for single gene conditions. Otherwise icsi doesn't help. Read more
