Will wearing a foot brace help heal midfoot ligament tear faster or is that more appropriate for a ankle tear?

Will wearing a foot brace help heal midfoot ligament tear faster or is that more appropriate for a ankle tear?

Rest, time, PT, Rx: Midfoot ligament tear will heal with rest and minimal immobilization. Ultrasound therapy is helpful. Injecting platelet rich plasma may help. An NSID is ok if you are able to tolerate the drug. I like the idea of your wearing a brace - it serves as a reminder to rest the foot. Read more

Shouldn't be walking: If you have a torn ligament then your foot should be in a brace or a cast until you are seen by an orthopedic surgeon. Keep the foot at a 90 degree angle constantly gives it a better chance of holding together and healing. This cannot be accomplished without some external structure. Read more

Have it evaluated: Twisting ones’ ankle can lead to a sprained ankle. Often times, this may result in ligament or tendon injuries which may lead to ankle bruising, swelling, pain, and possibly instability. An x-ray of the foot and ankle will be able to assist in differentiating a sprain form a fracture. Read more

How can you tell that you have a torn ligament in your ankle?

Get evaluated: A torn ligament in your ankle will present itself with pain and swelling, similar to an ankle sprain or fracture. When you get evaluated, the physician may manipulate your ankle to test for torn ligaments. Examples of these tests are the anterior draw or stress inversion. While torn ligaments have similar characteristics as stretched out ligaments, imaging studies like MRI may be used to diagnose. Read more
