Intestine (Definition)

The gastrointestinal tract starts at the mouth, travel down the tunnel (esophagus), which connects to the stomach, which then empties into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum---the three parts of the small intestine (@25 feet). This empties into the colon or large intestine (about 5 feet), which then becomes the sigmoid colon, rectum and out the anus. So, every morsel eaten ...Read more

I have had a problem with being able to have a bowel movement for a week or so now I do have the urge to but when I go nothing happens please help?

Many tests available: Sounds like you have a functional defecation disorder, or FDD or possibly a rectocele. 1st step is to get tested. A good GI doctor can perform rectal manometry, where a special catheter measures pressures of muscles that are involved with retaining and propelling stool. If this fails, you can get defecating proctogram or MRI defecography, but this means you have to be in the Radiology department. ...Read more

I've been on weight watchers for 2 months now and I have a bowel movement once a week. Is this normal?

Possibly normal: Once a week bowel movements is unusual but not unheard of. As stool stays in the colon longer, the water is absorbed and the stool becomes hard, sometimes so hard that it cannot be passed with a normal bowel movement. So if you abdomen is not distended, you are not having abdominal pain, the stool is soft when you go, and you feel that you have emptied, once a week could be normal for you. ...Read more

When I go to the toilet and have a bowel movement, I saw some blood when I wiped. It's for 2 days now in a row. What can it be?

Blood in stool.: Generally speaking, if it’s red blood it may represent a hemorrhoid, anal fissure or bleeding site in the distal colon. If the stool is generally black, then this could suggest a bleeding site in the upper GI tract, such as the stomach. Regardless, hazarding an actual diagnosis virtually would not be wise. You should be evaluated by your doctor. ...Read more

Fissure in ano: It sounds as if you may have an anal fissure. This can be incredibly painful and could also be infected. You should apply warm compresses or sit in hot water 4-6 times a day, dry off thoroughly and apply a soothing ointment after each soak. Though you can take Tylenol, (acetaminophen) you will most likely need to see a doctor to get more help for the muscle spasm that is causing the severe pain. ...Read more

I'm a yoga teacher and have never had back pain, recently I heard a pop when having a bowel movement now my legs are starting to go numb as well?

See below: Sitting down in a forward leaning position places the most pressure on our lumbar discs. My baby's body does not recognize that he needs to poop I have had to use glycerin suppositories two days in a row now to make him have a bowel movement what else can I do it makes him very fussy and spits up when he cannot use the bathroom?

Make defecation fun!: Defecation/evacuation=a built in reflex. Creating/promoting control issues (you/others vs. Baby) creates problems (wars) leading to longstanding health problems. If baby has been scolded/punished (by anyone) for defecating at inconvenient time/location, problems begin & can build. Study: William & Martha Sears many books, e.g. "Attachment Parenting" for better strategies; not product marketing. ...Read more

Don't eat lots but haven't had a bowel movement for almost 3 days now. Is this an issue? Can't be normal?

Constipation: While there can be a lot of variability on how frequent someone poops, at the 3 day mark, it sounds like you're constipated. You should focus on staying hydrated, increasing your fiber intake, keep active and consider an over the counter laxative like Senna. If you start developing abdominal pain and nausea/vomiting seek an urgent evaluation to make sure there is no obstruction going on. ...Read more

Bowel movements: It is not unusual for the frequency of bowel movements to be irregular. It is not a problem to have a bowel movement every other day. 16 yrs. Lost 35 lb in 6 months by eating more vegetables, less of everything else. Before diet bowel movement once a day. Now only every 3 days. Why?

Water: Veggies and fruit have lots of water. Eating efficiently and properly matching your physiological needs may have set a new baseline for you. Every 3rd day is a big change but not abnormal. The water in the veggies is absorbed, esp. If you are dehydrated. With less fats and proteins in your diet and in the gut, you have less fluid dynamics providing pressure for release. This is not my field, so.. ...Read more

I've been juicing for 2 months, now for the past 4 days I haven't had a complete solid bowel movement. Could something be wrong? Thanks

Probably not: If you are juicing and not eating solid food, you will not have daily bowel movements. Juicing is a way to get concentrated plant nutrients but there aren't many solids in juice. It wouldn't surprise me at all if your bowel movements were farther apart. I would only worry if your abdomen became distended and you started having abdominal pain. Otherwise, sounds normal for juicing Best wishes ...Read more
