Good skin care: Retinoids (derivatives vitamin a) may be some of the most effective medications and available as retinols (over the counter) or as a prescription in the form of retin a (tretinoin) or accutane. A good skin care regimen (soap/moisturizer/acid) are best and the acne may not always be preventable or treatable due to natural hormone alterations. No such thing: I'm sorry, Heather. If you have acne scars because your family didn't allow you to be treated by a scientific physician out of superstitious preference for "natural medicine", you have my deepest sympathy. An evidence-based dermatologist or plastic surgeon can offer you treatment with laser, microsurgery, and/or fillers. Nothing you do alone, or anything you can buy from an herbalist, will help. ...Read more
They won't work: Listen, friend. You're 19 years old and about to start up professional life. Acne is a serious, chronic, non-lifestyle-related disease that will be a major liability if you don't start taking care of it. If you're using only a topical antibiotic, it'll fail unless you also use topical benzoyl peroxide or something else. Let your physician, not some internet anti-science stuff, manage your illness. ...Read more

Get real Rx: Acne is a serious, chronic, non-lifestyle-related disease that any primary care physician can manage most of the time. The evidence for "natural remedies" for acne is interesting but at best anecdotal & these are at best supplemental. Don't let some slick promotion by an internet "natural medicine" guru deprive some teen of treatment that's required to prevent physical and emotional scarring. ...Read more

Forgive my frankness: Whoever has told you that "natural is good, everything else is bad" has done you a disservice. Vitamins / supplements work for other entities but are only placebos here. Benzoyl peroxide is nature's own oxygen within a naturally-occurring molecule. Topical Clindamycin and systemic antibiotics are both nature's gifts, and the oral contraceptive pill may clear a young woman. Be savvy & good luck. ...Read more
Forgive my frankness: Acne is a chronic, serious disease that's manageable by today's medications. The "pop" / "holistic" methods are adjuncts at best. If you are denying a teenager proper treatment because you don't like evidence-based medicine, the teen will hate you for it. If you have a mess of pimples at a job interview & say you "don't believe in pills", what will happen? Take advantage of the 21st century. ...Read more
Why not real Rx?: Even in today's insane health-care system, you can get something that works. I start with topical clindamycin, plus benzoyl peroxide if there aren't a lot of blackheads or a retinoic acid derivative if there are. A woman is often cleared by the oral contraceptive pill. If it's harder to manage, i add a systemic antibiotic appropriate for the person. Dermatologists have the big guns. Good luck. ...Read more

Forget "natural": Forgive me... All acne's manageable, but despite testimonials about a disease that comes and goes, "natural" remedies don't work, and some are ludicrous (sleeping with your face soaked in honey...) your personal physician can clear you up using scientific medicine. This is the 21st century and it's your right -- your taxes fund the research that's made us the healthiest people who've ever lived. ...Read more
Can only Improve: You cannot "erase" scars. Poor scars can be improved through the following methods: 1) scar massage 2) silicone sheeting (a kind of silicone tape you where over the scar) 3) steroid injections 4) laser treatment (helps remove coloring) 5) scar revision (removing the scar and starting over). Consult with a plastic surgeon to find out which combination of these would best work for you. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
