Congestive Heart Failure (Definition)

Congestive heart failure, otherwise known simply as heart failure, is a condition in which the heart muscle is weakened. It may be receiving inadequate blood flow, its valves might be malfunctioning or the heart muscle might have thickened or stiffened. As a result, the heart, which is a pump, cannot supply the body with sufficent oxygen and nutrients. When the left side of the heart is damaged, fluid builds up in the lungs, which results in difficulty breathing. When the right side of the heart is affected, fluid builds up in the extremities and abdomen, resulting in swelling of the legs and poor absorption of nutrients due to ...Read more

Why does fluid build up around the lungs in congestive heart failure (chf)?

Why does fluid build up around the lungs in congestive heart failure (chf)?

Problem is the heart: In chf, the heart cannot effectively pump blood from the lungs to the systemic circulation. So, the fluid cannot move forward and it thus remains backed up in the lungs. The fluid stays in the lungs because the heart is unable to do its job of pumping that from the lungs to the rest of the body. ...Read more

46 has pnuemonia and just found out she has congestive heart failure. Does this mean every time she gets sick fluid will build up around her lungs?

46 has pnuemonia and just found out she has congestive heart failure. Does this mean every time she gets sick fluid will build up around her lungs?

Not exactly: Patients with congestive heart failure develop fluid in the lung tissue as well as outside the lung as one of the complications of congestive heart failure. When the heart is not pumping effectively is does not empty properly, the blood pressure in the lungs is elevated and fluid leaks out of the vessels into the tissues. This can occur whenever the heart failure worsens, like with an infection. ...Read more

Depends,: The details that matter include how bad are kidneys eg stage 3, 4, 5? And how bad is heart ejection fraction ef, how low? 30, 20, 10? How responsive is she to water pills? Does she have other illnesses (comorbidities)? She sounds certainly very ill. Ask her doc about more information including above questions and the discussion will flow more naturally to better answer the question of longevity. ...Read more

At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more
