Gum recession, an baby boomer epidemic is "toothbrush abrasion! Brushing long hard, in circles, in large sweeps scratch the gums of the hard glass like enamel exposing the soft wood like roots, With age or meds the mouth environment drys and the soft roots harbor bacteria which quickly and painlessly finds its way to the nerve. By the time it is noticed it may too far gone. DON'T SCRUB!

Dr. Mark Birnbach answered:

Could a waterpik cause gum recession?

Waterpik

Infection
Waterpiks are used to treat gum infections. When infected, the gum tissue swells. When it's healthy, it shrinks. If the waterpik is used properly ( have your dentist or hygienist demonstrate the proper techniques) it will not cause recession, though the healthy tissue will be lower than before.

Yes it can

Teeth
Where there is recession there is also some loss of the bone supporting your teeth. If you have too much bone loss then your teeth can become loose and you may loose them. The best thing is treatment , the sooner the better, so that you do not loose your teeth. Your dentist may refer you to a periiodontist, a specialist in gum diseases for this problem.

Can a Waterpik cause gum recession?

Not likely

Head-teeth
But used incorrectly, it can push debris into the sulcus around your tooth instead of dislodging it. The food and bacteria can irritate the gum, which can then cause the recession. Brushing too hard with a hard bristle toothbrush can also cause the gums and bone to recede.

Dr. Joel Doyon answered:

Could I reverse gum recession by better flossing?

See a dentist

Flossing
Better flossing is always the gold standard for great oral care. Now, can increased flossing result in gums growing back? It all depends on how much gum tissue has receded and how much of the tooth shows. You should see a dentist to get an evaluation of your teeth, then he can discuss ways to get your gums to look the best way they can.
