Some conditions, like a single major depressive episode, require at least six months to ensure adequate treatment. For some conditions, zoloft (sertraline) is prescribed indefinitely. Some medications make hyponatremia more likely. The good general approach is to drink only if you are thirsty. The main reason to drink a lot is if you have kidney stones. Drinking a lot reduces the chance of stones coming back. There is no evidence that drinking a lot of water helps with weight control.
