Body Mass Index (Definition)

Body mass index (BMI) is a measurement based on a person's height and weight, to decide if a person is too heavy or too light for his height. The index is a number that can be in the underweight range, normal range, overweight range, or obese range. Children use different number ranges than adults do, ...Read more

Are online BMI calculators accurate or is one website more accurate than others?

Are online BMI calculators accurate or is one website more accurate than others?

All should be OK: If you enter your correct height and weight into any bmi calculator, the results should be correct. The exact meaning of a particular bmi might be open to interpretation as someone who is very muscular and has only 4% body fat might have a higher bmi than a couch potato who has love handles. For most of us, the bmi is a good indicator of appropriate weight versus overweight. ...Read more

Hi LDL: Hi. Your BP is excellent. Your LDL is high and your HDL is not great. Your triglycerides and calculated VLDL are great (and suggestive of good insulin sensitivity). You're young, and it's hard to recommend lifelong preventive medicine sometimes for some people (not for me or for many others, however). Glucose > 100 - was that fasting? If so, that's abnormal; if not, probably OK. I'd treat LDL. ...Read more

Would you consider anorexia that's 5'3" and 77.5 lbs severe? I know most severe ones are between BMI 9-12 I'm not I'm at 13

BMI of 13 dangerous: Whatever label one might put on it, a BMI of 13 is dangerous. Anorexia nervosa is very serious. Young women die from it all the time. Please get help with this life-threatening condition. There's nothing more tragic than an otherwise healthy young woman literally starving herself to death because of deranged body image. Please do not minimize or rationalize this. Get help. Your life is at stake. ...Read more

Hi, Does a 31.9 BMI mean one looks obese or is just medically obese. I'm a stocky build (5'8 and 207 lbs) and want to lose around 25 lbs. Thank you.

Waist circumference: Hi. Muscular people can have a higher BMI and no be obese because muscle is more dense than fat. Check your waist circumference. The farther below 40 inches it is, the less likely you are to suffer obesity related diseases. Of course the fact you take prednisone (are you chronically on it?), the more likely obesity and obesity related diseases. Weight loss is tough on prednisone. Good luck! ...Read more

My weight is 66kg now. I want to reduce it to 60 kgs over a period of one year from now. Can I do that even my BMI is average? What is the best method

Slow and consistent : Losing 6 kg(~13 lb) over a one year period of time is reasonable. That is only a decrease of about 3500 calories a month or a little over a 100 calories a day. Start by reducing or eliminating any high calorie drinks such as soda, juice or alcohol. Start a consistent walking program, minimize fast food, concentrate on whole foods: lean meat, veggies and fruit. Have a cheat meal every now and then. ...Read more

I have a BMI of 32.5 and took Plan B one-step within an hour of the condom breaking but will my weight effect the effectiveness of the EC?

Probably no effect: There have not been many studies regarding Plan B use among obese patients. The package insert recommends caution. Most likely Plan B still has its intended effect of decreasing the risk of unplanned pregnancy. Consider starting an IUD or Implant to avoid these scares in the future ...Read more

My BMI is currently 19.96 yet I have an 32 inch belly.. How much weight should I lose to finally get a flat one? Im 161 and 52 kg

Since one can't: Predict how the weight will come off- can't estimate how much weight you need to lose. There's no such thing as natural spot fat loss. You need to lose weight in general ; a certain % will be abdominal fat. Eat healthfully ; be physically active. Calories burned must > calories consumed. To tighten ab's do crunches, reverse crunches, exercise ball crunches, pelvic thrusts, lying leg raises, side. ...Read more

Bmi or body type mesomorph? Which one is better I want to be 115. Right now i'm 142 but my rib cage is showing i'm 5"5' what can I do?

Bmi or body type mesomorph? Which one is better I want to be 115. Right now i'm 142 but my rib cage is showing i'm 5"5' what can I do?

Depends: By the growth charts of the cdc your expected weight for height would be 120lb while a bmi chart would put you at 132 lb to be average weight for height. Most would agree that more muscle mass is preferred to more chub, and both charts do not make a distinction. Your pcp can give you specific recommendations based on your body. Need different med: Triglycerides are not significantly lowered with statin medications like rosuvastatin. Fish oil 2 gm twice daily and Niacin are better for lowering the triglycerides in addition to dietary changes and exercise. Stay away from saturated fats like butter, eat more olive oil/canola oil. Stay away from fried food and consider getting tested for diabetes and hypothyroidism which can raise levels also. ...Read more

Why does BMI increase when one starts weight training and replacing fat with muscle mass? Weight increases while becoming leaner, but BMI increases?

Why does BMI increase when one starts weight training and replacing fat with muscle mass? Weight increases while becoming leaner, but BMI increases?

Not perfect!: Bmi only takes into account weight and height. That is good enough for most people but for people that exercise a lot and have a lot of muscle it is not a good reflection of their actual fitness. Muscle weighs more than fat so the bmi can increase even though you are in better shape. Most pro athletes have bmis that are in the "wrong" range. Worry about your overall health and not the number. ...Read more

Is BMI a good way to determine proper weight? I've heard body fat % is morene accurate. A 5-6 solid muscle guy could be over 200 lbs& considered obese

Both would be best.: The BMI reflects your weight with respect to your height, but as you suggested does not reflect body composition. People who are very muscular could have a higher BMI that would not be truly reflective of their fitness and health. Combining the BMI with a body fat percentage would greatly increase its accuracy. ...Read more

I have PCOS but normal weight. At one point in my life my BMI was low(19/20).only then my periods became more regular.Low carb help lean pcos as well?

PCOS: Yes, I recommend low carb diet and preferably Gluten free when you eat carbs.(WHOLEAPPROACH.COM/GUTBLISS.COM/PALEODIET) Also frequent evaluation of labs especially thyroid and diabetes screening. I have had good results with Metformin and Topamax (topiramate) if weight becomes an issue. ...Read more

Discuss with her doc: The us preventive services task force says that elderly people between 75-84 should not be routinely screened for colorectal cancer and those over 85 should not be screened at all. They are at higher risk for complications from the procedure and may not benefit from screening. If your mom is getting a recommendation that don’t fit the guidelines, ask the doctor his/her reasoning. ...Read more
