Be aware: This could be a sign of a blood clot — a so called deep vein thrombosis, although this type of swelling tends to be pitting. Nonpitting edema tends to be from lymphatic obstuction or from deposition of certain substances like you see with hypothyroidism(though this tends to be bilateral — on both sides). Go to primary care: With your history I would want to make sure that they did urine tests to make sure that there is no protein in your urine. An urinalysis is the initial test done in most cases. An er is often not the best place to get this evaluated and you may be better off seeing a primary care physician who will decide if you need further referrals. Edema.: Edema in lower extremities comes from interplay of many factors — protein content of blood, hydrostatic pressure induced by gravity, the state of valves in veins, the amount of circulating fluid in bloodstream and the degree of competency of lymphatic system. 12d s/p 2nd deg ATFL ankle sprain. Still, 2+ pitting edema entire foot dorsum, not just ankle. Elevating helps a bit. Why circulation issue? What 2do?
May be due to HTN: It is common to have swelling for 3-6 months after a severe ankle sprain. But pitting edema is usually a result of venous disease. The veins do get damaged when you sprain your ankle, leading to swelling, but since you have high blood pressure as well, the veins have been insufficient before the injury and are now damaged more. I recommend you see a vascular specialist. ...Read more
