Sprained my ankle pretty badly 2 yrs ago; stayed off for 3-4 wks; but can be unstable even when walking to this day + can hurt. Suggestions?
Physical therapy: Recommend that you do some rehabilitation exercises to strengthen your ankle. It sounds like the muscles, tendons and ligaments that stabilize the ankle are loose as a result of the sprain which was never rehabbed. For all of my patients with first time or multiple ankle sprains I recommend physical therapy to strengthen and retrain the ankle for balancing and gait retraining. ...Read more

Sprained my ankle badly a fewyears ago, recently again,it's been very painful.I've heard of people using walking boots for sprains.would that be good?
Be seen: It would probably be a good idea to be seen first, in part to make sure you have not sustained a more severe injury than an ankle sprain such as, for example, a fracture. Mild ankle fractures may not need any immobilization although sometimes an ace wrap can reduce swelling. Severe grade III ankle sprains can be treated for the short term with rigid immobilization such as cast or boot. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

In PT for bad ankle sprain, but just badly reinjured getting back to cheer (with a good brace). If PT isn't helping, what's next?
Don't quit PT: Physical therapy will help improve your proprioception so as to improve your ability to prevent future ankle sprains. Even the best brace can't prevent all injuries. I understand you are eager to return to cheer, but patience will be your best friend. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
No: Not a good idea, in fact you are asking for trouble and can do more damage. A sprained ankle is usually caused by the same motion needed for an ankle fracture. It's better to let the ankle sprain heal rather than risk more complications (fracture, joint damage, etc). If you need a doctor referral, see dr. Dane wukich or patrick burns at upmc. Best of luck! ...Read more
