How strong are the intestines?

How strong are the intestines?

Strong!: Think of all the crud we put into our bodies each day - brownies, cookies, 'sweet chili heat doritos'! we put our intestines through a lot, but most of the time they do their job of sucking out whatever nutrients and water they can. Some things intestines can't handle: magnets, sharp pointy things, poison. If you have downed any of these, swallow your pride and see your doctor asap. ...Read more

Intestine (Definition)

The gastrointestinal tract starts at the mouth, travel down the tunnel (esophagus), which connects to the stomach, which then empties into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum---the three parts of the small intestine (@25 feet). For how long should I avoid black and strong ground roast coffee prepared in a french press if I have colitis/irritable bowel syndrome?

I would stay: Away from such sources as caffeine in either case as it increases acid production and dehydrates, leading to constipation and potentially worsening your symptoms. That being said colitis and irritable bowel are 2 completely different entities! They are not synonymous. Make sure your diagnosis is clearto you and your doctor. ...Read more

How are the bowel and urinary systems related? I often find that about 20 minutes after a bowel movement, I have a strong urge to urinate...Why?

Bowels/bladder: Sometimes the presence of stool in the rectum will place pressure on the urethra acting to "hold" the urine - once it is relieved you may have the urge to void. Yesterday I was in agony from constipation. Today still constipated but strong pain when squeezing bowel muscles. Plus dark urine. Drink more water?

Good start but...: How do you define "constipation? " a medical definition is bowel infrequency (less than one bowel movement every 3-4 days). I know of no patient who died due to bowel infrequency, straining, or episodic constipation. On the other hand, an obstructed colon (due to inflammation, mass, impaction, pseudo-obstruction) risks ruptures, leaks, infarcts. Especially if in agony, go get checked now please. ...Read more

Unusual odor: Unusual odor in an otherwise normal appearing stool has no diagnostic significance. So for about 1.5 years I've noticed a change in my digestive health, where it has a strong odor no matter what I do. I've seen a primary doctor twice. And I've seen a Gastro doc. The gastro doc says its perfectly normal to have multiple bowel movements

Strong odor: The odor of stool is strong. That is normal. It is normal to have several BM's a day. We have what is called a gastric colic reflex that encourages to defecate after meals. This is from ancient times when we were often chased or did the chasing to get our meals. We emptied our bowels to be lighter and swifter. This reflex is stronger in some people. The GI doc is correct. ...Read more

Why do I have fecal body odor? I am very hygienic I shower everyday and wipe my butt until the paper is white after a bowel movement but now I have started to notice a strong fecal body odor coming from me. A couple of times I have entered my finger into

From: From the chain of correspondence you have had with dr. Fowler, you may be suffering from fecal incontinence, which is the inability to control your bowel movements, causing stool (feces) to leak unexpectedly from your rectum, ranging from an occasional leakage of stool while passing gas to a complete loss of bowel control. Common causes of fecal incontinence include constipation, diarrhea, and muscle or nerve damage. Fecal incontinence may be due to a weakened anal sphincter associated with aging or to damage to the nerves and muscles of the rectum and anus from giving birth. Treatment will depend on the cause of fecal incontinence, but usually will start with dietary management and then medications, including laxatives and stool softeners. If the determination is made that the sphincter is lax or there is nerve damage, then sphincteroplasty may be beneficial. In some cases, sacral nerve stimulation may be considered. You may wish to see your gastroenterologist or a colorectal surgeon to assist in the management of your fecal incontinence. ...Read more
