Not good: Ca 19.9 can be useful to determine if a cancer is of pancreatic or biliary origin and most often is used to monitor response to therapy. It is not a screening test as it can go up in non malignant conditions and does not go up in all cancers. It is not meant to be drawn to "see if there's cancer". Best yo you. ...Read more
Screening? No: Ca 125 is not a screening test. It can be elevated for reasons other than cancer. It should be used for follow up of certain cancers ie ovarian cancer. Even then, it is done periodically as part of surveillance strategy. Also used to help the clinician decide if a patient who is on chemotherapy is responding or not & some oncologists obtain them per 'cycle' of chemotherapy i.e. Every 3-4 wks. ...Read more
No: It is not. It is often used as such but: a hint of oca requires careful investigation, often surgery. Ca-125 gives many "false positives" so some surgeries would have been unnecessary . This would be ok with those who had oca, but perhaps not with those who did not. Ca-125 also gives "false negatives". This is worse, as the reassurance was misleading! pelvic sonography is a better tool. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Likewise, even if there is a tumor in the pancreas, the ca 19-9 may be normal in approximately 10% of the population that does not express that serum marker. It needs to be interpreted in context. ...Read more

An : An eeg test or electroencephalogram is an electrical test. Often called a brainwave test it is similar to an electrocardiogram of the heart. It involves placing numerous electrodes on the scalp and recording electrical activity generated by your brain. The newer recording devices are computerized and have made the recordings faster. In the old days a series of recordings were made sampling activity from one set of electrodes compared to electrodes on the opposite side of the scalp using multiple combinations of electrodes. This is now done via computer. There is a portion of the test that measures the response of the brain waves to hyperventilation(heavy breathing) and a third part looks at the brain's response to strobe light flashing at different frequencies. Depending on what your doctor is suspecting she may request that you stay up late the night before and skip coffee to enable you to sleep during the test. Sometimes the test is done in the fasting state but not usually. An ordinary waking eeg usually takes about a half an hour. If a sleep study is requested. It will be longer. Occasionally 24 hour monitoring may be requested. This is done with video monitoring in the hospital if epilepsy is a question. Occasionally the patient is hooked up and allowed to go home with the electrodes and a recording device that stay on for a day. There is no discomfort associated with the test. ...Read more

On the other hand, home blood glucose monitors are also quite reliable specially for day to day decision making. ...Read more
