What can I do to stop recurring UTI after three different antibiotic treatments did not work?

What can I do to stop recurring UTI after three different antibiotic treatments did not work?

Verify UTI diagnosis: Most important thing is to verify that you have been truly having recurrent utis as there are other urinary conditions that can mimic the same symptoms. Though a urinalysis can be suggestive, often misleading. Urine culture required to verify. If DX of recurrent UTI is correct, recommend urological evaluation to determine cause. Daily low-dose antibiotic for 6-12 weeks a common treatment option. ...Read more

For 4 months I have uti and im taking lots of antibiotics all doesn't work. I had a bit if yellow discharge and I pee more than 10x a day. What can I do?

Probably not a UTI: There are many causes of urinary pain and frequent urination. A common cause is bacterial infection (UTI) but when antibiotics do not improve symptoms, you either have an antibiotic-resistant infection (would be shown on urine culture) or the cause is simply not a bacteria. It's too involved to describe here, but try looking up "Bladder pain syndrome, " to see if it describes what you are feeling ...Read more

Will this antibiotic work for my UTI even though I was already on it once and it didn't work? I am 9 weeks pregnant and I have a uti. I was put on nitrofurantoin mono/mac 100mg twice a day for 7 days. I felt better for a few days, but the infection return

Will this antibiotic work for my UTI even though I was already on it once and it didn't work? I am 9 weeks pregnant and I have a uti. I was put on nitrofurantoin mono/mac 100mg twice a day for 7 days. I felt better for a few days, but the infection return

Be: Be confident that your doctor is doing the right thing. The urine culture that was done shows which antibiotics will work and which will not against the bacteria that is causing the infection. If you were put on Nitrofurantoin again then I am sure the culture showed that the bacteria was sensitive to it. Recurrent uti's are very common in pregnancy, and the fact that you took the antibiotic before does not mean it will not work this time.
If you need more reassurance or explanation don't hesitate to contact your doctor.
Take care. ...Read more

Pediatric UTI: This sounds like a job for a pediatric urologist. There are many possibilities, and you have not provided sufficient info for a diagnosis to be made. A 4 yr old needs to be fully evaluated, not only for possible causes, including anatomic defects, but also for the possibility of abuse. See a good pediatrician and get a recommendation. ...Read more

I'm on my 3rd antibiotic for uti What if this don't work?

See below: The most important course of action is make sure the diagnosis of UTI is correct by obtaining both a urinalysis and urine culture (C/S). The latter will verify if a UTI is still present, identify the specific bacteria, and identify which antibiotics it is sensitive to. There are other conditions which can mimic a UTI. If recurrent UTI, further testing and long-term antibiotics may be necessary. ...Read more

I have been on antibiotic for 1 1/2 days for severe uti. How long does it take for antibiotics to work?

Within a day: Great question. Since uti's are painful, effective therapy can alleviate this symptom within a day. However, other symptoms, depending on the severity of infection, may take up to a week (fever, malaise) or so to abate (eg. Flank pain). If symptoms smolder, inform your prescriber immedately- antibiotics may need to be adjusted. Hopefully, a urine culture was intially done to guide antibiotic choice. ...Read more

Which antibiotics works for UTIs? Can Docycycline/Doryx work for a UTI?

Many antibiotics.: Optimal 1st antibiotic choice for UTIs are trimethoprim-sulfa (Bactrim), Cipro (ciprofloxacin) & Macrodantin. Amoxicillin, Augmentin & sulfonamides + sometimes tetracyclines (like Docycycline) used 2B first choice but more & more UTIs are resistant to them hence the change. Also reason why we recommend urine cultures co-incident with urinalysis to insure bacteria causing UTI are sensitive to prescribed medication ...Read more

How long do docs recommend I should I give home remedies to work before taking antibiotics for an uti?

No time at all: You need antibiotics to kill the bacteria causing a uti. There is no scientific evidence that any home remedies cure utis. Please don't count on any documented UTI clearing up without antibiotics. Good luck. ...Read more

Hi, I have been on my antibiotics for a kidney infection and UTI for three days, is it ok to have an alcoholic beverage?

Hi, I have been on my antibiotics for a kidney infection and UTI for three days, is it ok to have an alcoholic beverage?

Not a good idea!: Kidney infections are very serious. Your body needs to spend its energy fighting the infection. Do no impair its ability to do so by forcing it to deal with alcohol too! A drink is not worth the risk of worsening of the infection or slowing the response to treatment. Also, several antibiotics should not be taken with alcohol. Please hold off until you are completely well and infection free. ...Read more
