How Old Is Too Old To Join The Military
My 70 year old mother is recovering from surgery to fix a broken hip. How can I help her become independent again?
Encouragement: You can help by keeping her spirits up and encourage her to move and to walk. However, this will take time (sometimes 12 months) and the number of patients who will regain functional independence is usually about 50% with most patients losing one grade of activity (i.e. If prior to fracture, she was a community ambulator, she will likely be a home or limited community ambulator). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
She decides: A person's best weight, at any age, is whatever looks and feels best to him/her while he/she is able to take part successfully in whatever sports he/she prefers. A sprinter and a linebacker may be the same height but differ by over 100 lb with each at his best weight. The stuff about 'bmi' has all elite strength athletes 'overweight' / 'obese' and elite triathletes 'underweight.' common sense. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I'm (almost) a 17 year old male who is 5' 5.5". Both my parents are 5' 5". What is and what can I do to grow to my maximum potential height? Thanks!

Eat healthy&exercise: I generally avoid having parents focus on having their child lose weight at this age (unless significantly obese). It's best to avoid weight gain (as your child is still growing, s/he can get more "lean" by just not gaining weight)! best to eat right & fill the plate half-full with fruits/veggies. Limit carbs (rice, bread, pasta, juice, chips). Get plenty of exercise- sports are great at this age! ...Read more
Depends: There is a wide range of normal weights for pre-teens. The most important thing is to look at the growth chart and see how she's been growing over the years. If she is growing consistently, and has a normal bmi (body mass index), the weight may be normal for her. A yearly well check is the best way to make sure your child's growth is good. ...Read more
Isnt being online constantly a danger to my 13 year old child? Why does fb want to drop the age limit?
Danger?: Being online constantly is dangerous if you are not monitoring her activity, who her friends are. Etc. Children should not have more than 2 hrs a day total for all media time. This may be adjusted for homework that is on the computer. I would be concerned as she is not interacting with real people and learning age appropriate social interactions. ...Read more
I have a 13 year old daughter who is interested in going to the gym to lift weights. Is it safe for her to work out with me?
How does a counselor know how to treat a teenager without talking to the mother? Is it common for a counselor not to discuss anything with the parents when a 14 year old is in counseling? The 14 has not seen her father since she was 2 years old. The court
Hello : Hello writer from bothell, wa, from the emails you have sent in recently, it is clear that you don't agree with how the court system is handling your family's situation. It isn't clear from your submissions if the counselor is authorized to discuss your daughter's case with you. As a therapist i try to look at the dynamics of the family to get an idea of what approach is best for the patient. With some cases, i also have to take into account legal directives from a judge. If you believe that there are some very pertinent pieces of information that the therapist is not aware of, you can ask your legal counsel about what vehicle can be used to transmit that information. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is 5'7 too tall for a 17 year old female? And what should the average weight be for that height ?
Depends: Average height depends on genetics. Certain peoples are taller than others (Scandinavians vs Asians) for example. If you had regular exams through childhood, your doc will have charted your growth and noted where it ranges in comparison with other guys. Final height depends on the height of your parents, and your nutrition during childhood. ...Read more
No precise age: The question is perhaps best answered when the risks of the procedure outweigh the benefits. This occurs at different ages for different patients. It can be a vexing problem if patients are unrealistic about their rehabilitation potential and their goals. It is not common for a kidney transplant to be done over age 75 but a few are done each year, even for healthy octogenarians. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Hey I am 17 year old male and my height is 5'11" and I want to know how to grow more cause my moms height is 5'3" and my father is 6'0"?
Can't do much: At 17 years old, you are pretty close to your final adult height. If you were to reference the CDC's growth charts, you would see that you may indeed reach 6'0''. Genetics play a large role (i.e. your height is very much "pre-determined" right from the start). After puberty, there isn't much you can do to "grow more". Just eat healthy and don't take any unproven supplements or hormones. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
